NARAL Pro-Choice America Unveils Largest Electoral Program in Its History

Targeted News Service (Press Releases)

WASHINGTON, Dec. 6 -- NARAL Pro-Choice America issued the following news release:

* * *

- Nation's Leading Pro-Choice Advocacy Group Will Invest $34.7 Million in Multi-faceted Electoral Program Targeting 3.6 Million Voters in Key States to Win Races Up and Down the Ballot in 2020 Election

NARAL Pro-Choice America today announced its 2020 political program, a multi-faceted electoral program aiming to reach 3.6 million voters in eight key states: Arizona, Colorado, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Georgia, Iowa, and North Carolina.

In what will be the organization's largest election program in history, NARAL plans to invest $34.7 million toward an integrated organizing, communications, digital, and political program designed to win races up and down the ballot. Through this unprecedented investment, NARAL is employing an array of tactics including direct mail, digital, door-to-door canvassing, TV ads, and events aimed toward reaching, persuading, and mobilizing key voter segments who will be essential to win critical races.

Key to NARAL's strategy is reaching soft-partisan persuadable women voters and motivating low-propensity, pro-choice voters. Many soft-partisan persuadable women voters are motivated by Trump and Republicans' commitment to ending Roe, criminalizing abortion, and punishing women, and low-propensity pro-choice voters were essential to ushering in the most diverse, progressive, pro-choice majority in history in the 2018 midterm elections. These critical voting blocs value reproductive freedom and align with the seven in 10 Americans who support Roe v. Wade. The organization will leverage cutting-edge research and new, values-based persuasion messaging to mobilize voters. NARAL is also investing early in inoculating voters against the extreme disinformation campaigns that have become the anti-choice movement and Republicans' calling card.

"NARAL's investment in 2020 is the most ambitious in the history of the organization. The times demand it. The fate of Roe, the right to access abortion, and reproductive freedom are all on the ballot next year, and beating Trump and regaining a pro-choice Senate is imperative to safeguarding these hard-won freedoms. NARAL was made for this moment," said Ilyse Hogue, President of NARAL Pro-Choice America. "Trump and Republicans know that banning abortion is a losing issue for them, so they spread disinformation and mislead voters. NARAL stands ready to combat this and make sure the truth stays front and center. Women voters, driven by their commitment to fight Trump's attacks on our fundamental freedoms, are our superpower heading into 2020. Our army of 2.5 million members are fired up and ready to organize, mobilize, and win."

Reproductive freedom is a central issue in the 2020 election and support for Roe v. Wade is at a historic high (77 percent). This year alone, 31 states have pushed extreme bans on abortion in an unprecedented attack geared toward undoing Roe and revealing the anti-choice movement's ultimate goal of banning abortion outright. There is no state in the country where banning abortion is popular. Reproductive freedom is a winning issue and a vote driver for Democrats. Polls show that over 70% of Democratic voters are more likely to vote for a candidate that supports abortion rights, and 56% of Democrats said the recent abortion bans are a key driver for their vote in 2020. And it's not just Democrats: Independent and soft partisan women do not like attacks on reproductive freedom either.

NARAL Pro-Choice America and its network of state affiliates and chapters are dedicated to protecting and expanding reproductive freedom for all. For more than 50 years, NARAL has worked to guarantee that every woman has the right to make personal decisions regarding the full range of reproductive choices, including preventing unintended pregnancy, bearing healthy children, and choosing legal abortion. Since 1969, NARAL has made history, grown to over 2.5 million members, and met the moments that have defined this fight with action, power and freedom.In recognition of its work defending our constitutional right to choose, Fortune Magazine described NARAL as "one of the top 10 advocacy groups in America."
