Monthly Fact Sheet as at 30 September 2024

UKI Markets via PUBT

Market commentary

September saw the Federal Reserve starting its rate cutting cycle, softer rhetoric from the Bank of Japan and significant stimulus announcements from China. UK equities underperformed with consumer confidence falling ahead of October's UK budget announcement.

The largest contributors to performance in the month were Kingfisher, Marks & Spencer and Anglo American. Detracting from performance were energy companies BP and Shell, and automaker Stellantis.

Marks & Spencer continues to trade strongly, taking further market share in both food and clothing; for some time, we have believed that there is much unrealised potential in the M&S brand, and it is heartening to see that this is now being realised. Kingfisher announced a reasonable set of interim results in which it pointed to some improvement in both of its major markets, the UK and France. Anglo American rose in reaction to a spike in metals following the announcement from China's central bank of a broad package of monetary stimulus measures. BP and Shell declined on the back of falling oil prices. The recent volatility in the energy markets highlights the challenges that we face in trying to place a fair value on companies that operate in inherently cyclical industries. Our approach is to use what we see as a cycle average oil price of around $70 to $80 per barrel and accept that there will be volatility around this estimate. Assuming a mid-seventies oil price in perpetuity, the shares of both BP and Shell offer considerable value at today's prices. Stellantis fell sharply at the end of September as it announced downgraded profit guidance for 2024.

UK equities continue to be valued at a significant discount to global equities generally. Accordingly, we believe that, notwithstanding the shorter-term uncertainties, UK equities are priced to offer relatively attractive returns into the future.
