Monday storm left a mess of debris cleanup

Aug. 29--For those affected by Monday's storm, Tuesday brought two main tasks: clear tree debris and call insurance companies.

The hazardous weather included heavy rain, sporadic lightning and up to 82 mph winds.

But while those straight-line winds took a toll on some buildings around the area, the majority of the damage around town was primarily heavy tree debris.

In Vasa, the Lutheran Center's roof was damaged, and metal from a neighboring grain bin littered their property. Nick Weigman, 8, of Cannon Falls, picked up storm debris while his mom, Barbara Weigman, the church secretary, was inside with others waiting for instructions from the insurance company.

That was all they could do now, Barbara said, other than sweat during the clean-up work that was not yet finished. Their Tuesday morning coffee hour went on as scheduled.

Twins Carson and Treyton Lind, 13, also helped their stepdad fill the bed of a pickup with tree debris on their Vasa property.

While working in the rain, they said they were lucky the house wasn't hit. They had started work the day before, bringing debris to a community burn pile as well as creating their own.

In Red Wing, Public Works teams took on the majority of the community work and were scattered around town. Many had said they had been out since 7 a.m. finishing the previous day's job of cutting, moving and removing debris and uprooted trees.

The main impact reported was at the Red Wing airport, where a business' construction site had toppled and a hanger roof was damaged.

A handful of residents could also be seen coming in and out of the Ole Miss Marina to check for damage to their boats. Other than a few branches in the water here and there, only a single boat was visibly damaged.
