Dec. 26--Firefighters with the Maury County Fire Department responded to the scene of a two-vehicle collision on Pulaski Highway near Stiverville Road on Christmas Day, calling the outcome of the accident a "Christmas miracle."
The responders found one occupant trapped in a car and went to work removing the roof of the vehicle to extricate the ensnared motorist.
"The subject was able to walk away from the accident with non-life-threatening injuries and was transported by Maury EMS," the department shared in a message on Wednesday afternoon.
A young child was riding in one of the vehicles and sustained minimal injuries thanks to the family's proper use of a car seat, firefighters said.
"If you are ever in an accident make sure to replace your child safety seat as they are only rated for one collision," the department said in the statement. "Your insurance provider may also cover the replacement of this seat so please check with them in an event of an accident. Stay safe."
The Maury County Fire Department is a volunteer organization with about 150 to 200 volunteer firefighters.
The department operates from 12 stations scattered across Maury County's 620 square miles of land inhabited by about 100,000 people using 10 engines, five tanker trucks, five brush trucks, a mobile air unit and six support vehicles.
Maury County is one of the largest counties in the state in land mass. With 880 emergency calls answered this year, the department is expected to answer an estimated 1,000 emergencies by the end of the year.
