State joins suit against Trump's rollback of DACA

Maryland will sue the Trump administration over its termination of a program that protects illegal immigrants who were brought to the U.S. as children.

The Baltimore Sun reported Monday that Attorney General Brian E. Frosh is joining counterparts in California, Minnesota and Maine to challenge the president's decision.

Trump Administration officials announced last week that they would roll back the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program over six months. President Barack Obama introduced DACA to shield the young immigrants from deportation.

The lawsuit claims the termination of DACA could result in the federal government reneging on assurances it gave to those who signed up to get work permits under the program.

Baltimore

Rising violence getting rising state attention

Baltimore's rising violence has reached such a high level of concern that a Maryland Senate panel brought together local officials and experts to focus on how to reduce to bloodshed.

State Sen. Nathaniel McFadden told lawmakers Tuesday that when "all hell breaks loose" as it has Maryland's largest city, "the whole state has a problem." The Baltimore Democrat called on his colleagues to work together, because the problems Baltimore is facing are coming to other parts of the state.

Homicides and overdoses are threatening new records in the city. There have been 245 homicides so far this year, compared to 214 at this time last year.

WILMINGTON, Del. - A fire in Wilmington has claimed the life of one person and left another in critical condition. The News Journal in Wilmington, Delaware, reported Tuesday that the blaze on 37th Street started around 11:30 p.m. Monday.

Firefighters encountered heavy flames at the front door when they arrived. Crews made their way inside and rescued a man. He was later pronounced dead at a hospital. A woman was able to escape the burning building. But she was admitted to a hospital in critical condition. A third person suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Father, stepmother get probation for video 'pranks' on kids

FREDERICK - A husband and wife who posted controversial "prank" videos of themselves berating their children have been sentenced to five years of probation.

The Baltimore Sun reported Monday that Heather and Mike Martin each entered Alford pleas to two counts of child neglect. The pleas allow them to maintain their innocence while acknowledging the evidence. The Maryland couple uploaded videos to their "DaddyOFive" YouTube channel. In them, the parents screamed profanities at their children and broke their toys. They later apologized.

The probation precludes the Martins from contact with those children or their biological mother unless permitted by a court.
