Mangione faces federal charges in New York after extradition from Blair County

PATRICK CLOONAN For The Leader TimesLeader Times

HOLLIDAYSBURG — The Blair County chapter in the Luigi Mangione saga has ended, at least for now, while the alleged killer of a health insurance executive faces both state and federal charges in New York.

Before Altoona Magisterial District Judge Benjamin F. Jones Thursday morning, Mangione, 26, of Towson, Md., waived a preliminary hearing on charges of forgery, firearms not to be carried without a license, tampering with records, possession of instrument of crime and giving false identification to law enforcement officers.

Jones scheduled a preliminary arraignment for Jan. 25, though there have been reports any Pennsylvania charges will be pursued after Mangione's New York case is resolved.

Blair County Common Pleas Judge David B. Consiglio conducted the hearing of the commonwealth's Fugitive from Justice complaint, which resulted in Mangione's extradition.

"He is now in their custody," Blair County District Attorney Peter J. Weeks said. "He will go forth with New York to await trial or prosecution for his homicide and related charges in New York."

After Thursday's court proceedings, Altoona attorney Thomas M. Dickey told reporters he will continue to represent Mangione in Pennsylvania. While no defense attorney was listed in New York State court records as of early Thursday afternoon, there are reports that Mangione will be represented by a former New York prosecutor, Karen Friedman Agnifilo.

Mangione had been lodged without bail in the State Correctional Institution at Huntingdon while awaiting Thursday's court appearances in Hollidaysburg, just down the road from where he was arrested last week after five days on the run.

Mangione allegedly was carrying the gun used to kill Thompson, fake IDs reportedly used for lodging in New York, and about $10,000 when he was arrested while eating breakfast on Dec. 9 at a McDonald's in Altoona.

Mangione allegedly was motivated by anger toward the U.S. health care system and corporate greed, but UnitedHealthcare said he was never a client of that insurer.

According to the federal complaint quoted by the AP, a notebook Mangione was carrying when he was arrested included several handwritten pages expressing hostility toward the health insurance industry and wealthy executives in particular.

An August entry said that "the target is insurance" because "it checks every box," according to the filing. An entry in October "describes an intent to 'wack' the CEO of one of the insurance companies at its investor conference," the document said.

The killing ignited an outpouring of stories and social media posts about resentment toward U.S. health insurance companies, with some social media users calling the shooting payback.

Some protesters appeared outside the Hollidaysburg courthouse, one with a sign reading "Deny Delay Depose," a reference to words found on three shells used in the fatal shooting of Thompson on a midtown Manhattan street, another calling for authorities to "Free Luigi."

Meanwhile, things may be returning to normal for Blair County authorities.

On Wednesday, the first Blair County Shop with a Cop night was held at the Altoona Walmart, two miles down Plank Road from the McDonald's where Mangione was spotted and then arrested by Altoona Police Department.

Organizers said "it was an amazing success" and expressed their thanks "to all the law enforcement officers who volunteered their time, including local police, state troopers, the (Blair County) Sheriff's department, and game wardens."

As organizers posted on Facebook, "it truly takes a community to make something like this happen, and we're so grateful for each and every one of you" for what was done to help "create unforgettable memories for the kids" in Blair County.
