WASHINGTON, Feb. 25 -- The League of Conservation Voters issued the following news release:
The League of Conservation Voters (LCV) Action Fund, which works to elect candidates who will support sound environmental policies, announced today its endorsement of Senator Gary Peters for re-election to the U.S. Senate from Michigan.
"Senator Peters is a tireless advocate for the environment in Michigan and across the country," said LCV Action Fund Senior Vice President of Government Affairs Tiernan Sittenfeld. "His work to strengthen protections for the Great Lakes is essential to the more than half a million Michiganders whose jobs rely on that tremendous natural resource. His support for investment in green technologies is helping to create new jobs in the clean energy economy. As the climate crisis continues to fuel threats to the Great Lakes State, we need his voice in the Senate more than ever and are thrilled to endorse him for re-election."
"Gary Peters has been a champion for the Great Lakes and fresh water in Michigan," said Michigan League of Conservation Voters Executive Director Lisa Wozniak. "From securing funding to upgrade water infrastructure in Flint and working on pipeline safety to fighting for strong standards to regulate toxic PFAS chemicals, his voice has been critical in standing up for clean, safe drinking water for every community."
"I am honored to receive the LCV Action Fund endorsement and to stand with such a critical advocate for Michigan and our Great Lakes," said Senator Gary Peters. "With our skilled workforce, natural resources, and technological knowhow, Michigan is uniquely positioned to lead the way in driving clean energy technology including electric vehicles, protecting our Great Lakes and the public health from the dangers of climate change. I look forward to continuing to work with groups like the League of Conservation Voters and communities throughout Michigan to advance environmental and conservation policies that create 21st century jobs and preserve our Great Lakes for generations to come."
Senator Gary Peters has been a strong and effective advocate for protecting clean air and water since before he first entered Congress in 2009. In his first term in the Senate Peters has authored legislation to: protect the Great Lakes, including to strengthen freshwater oil response efforts; safeguard the use of science in decision-making; increase federal pipeline safety; and promote energy efficiency. Several of his efforts have been signed into law. He has been a key voice for clean water and as part of the bipartisan Great Lakes Task Force he has worked to defend the Great Lakes from threats ranging from invasive species to dangerous outdated pipeline infrastructure. Senator Peters has a 93 percent lifetime score on LCV's National Environmental Scorecard, including a perfect 100 percent score in 2017 and 2018.
