The bill, S-4983, would extend the automatic coverage period for newborns under their parents' health insurance from the current 60 days to 90 days after birth. Under existing law, coverage ends at 60 days unless parents actively enroll their child in a private plan or a public program such as NJ FamilyCare. By providing an additional 30 days of automatic protection, the bill aims to ease administrative burdens on new parents and prevent unnecessary gaps in care.

Under the bill, the extended coverage period would apply to health benefits contracts, policies, and plans delivered, issued, executed, or renewed 60 days after enactment.
