Labor commissioner says fraud will not be tolerated
Cherokee Tribune (Canton, GA)
ATLANTA – Labor Commissioner Bruce Thompson has issued the following statement in response to Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr's announcement that eight former state employees were indicted in Fulton County for unemployment insurance fraud:
"We have made it abundantly clear that we will not tolerate fraud, whether it comes from outside the state, inside Georgia, or within our agency," Thompson said. "We will continue to cooperate fully with the Georgia Inspector General's Office, the Georgia Attorney General's office, the U.S. Department of Labor, and other authorities to restore taxpayers' trust and ensure unemployment insurance remains a reliable safety net for those in genuine need.
"Together, we stand united in our mission to safeguard the Unemployment Insurance Trust Fund, leaving no room for fraudsters seeking to exploit this vital lifeline for Georgians."
Since assuming office in January, Thompson has worked to enhance the efficiency of the department and modernize the unemployment insurance system. Combating fraud is crucial to preserving the program's integrity and ensuring it continues to serve Georgians facing economic challenges.
