Kyger named American Dental Association trustee

Oct. 26--DENVER, Colo. -- Dr. Billie Sue Kyger, a practicing dentist in Gallipolis, was recently installed as a trustee of the American Dental Association at the ADA's 157th annual meeting.

Kyger will serve on the ADA Board of Trustees as the trustee of the Seventh District, which encompasses Indiana and Ohio. The ADA Board of Trustees formulates and reviews policies and programs, and makes recommendations to members of the ADA's governing body, the House of Delegates. As a member of the board, Kyger will play a major role in the organization's objective of being a leading organization and advocate in U.S. oral health.

Kyger currently serves on the ADA's Board of Trustees Budget and Finance Committee. She has been an active member of the Ohio Dental Association (ODA), was its president in 2002 through 2003 and now serves on the ODA Foundation's Board of Trustees. Kyger is also involved with a number of other professional organizations, including the Academy of General Dentistry, the American College of Dentists, the International College of Dentists and the Pierre Fauchard Academy.

Kyger graduated from the Ohio State University College of Pharmacy in 1979 and then the university's College of Dentistry in 1983. She and her husband, Dr. Timothy Kyger, operate Kyger Dental Associates in Gallipolis.

According to the organization's website, he ADA was first founded in 1859. It is considered by many to be the world's oldest and largest national dental association. The organization is based in Chicago. It has over 155,000 members.

According to an ADA national oral health agenda record, "The ADA advocates several positions to legislators in the U.S. Congress. Its agenda includes funding dental research into the safety and effectiveness of amalgam and fluoride, supporting student loans and residency programs for future dentists, increased dental coverage from Medicaid and CHIP programs, reducing dental costs through reform of insurance and medical liability and through health information technology, and improving public health through water fluoridation, tobacco control, and disaster planning and response."
