Karlie Kloss says no thanks to Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner’s White House politics

Supermodel Karlie Kloss will soon have Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump as in-laws, and she realizes that her marriage to Jared's younger brother Joshua Kushner will inevitably be viewed in connection to the divisive presidency of Donald Trump.

But Kloss made clear in a new interview that she and Joshua Kushner do not share Trump's politics. And while the White House senior advisors Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump may privately espouse social liberal leanings, they have hitched their careers and reputations to a president and administration that's been criticized for being hostile to gun control, immigrants, people of color, the LGBT community and women's access to reproductive rights and health care.

"Josh and I share a lot of the same liberal values that guide our lives and the things we stand for," the 26-year-old model told Vogue.

Kloss and Joshua Kushner, 33, have been open about their political leanings, Vogue noted. Kloss voted for Hillary Clinton, while Joshua Kushner, said to be a life-long Democrat, raised millions for an Obamacare start-up company he founded.

Joshua Kushner also attended the Women's March in Washington, D.C., the day after Trump was inaugurated, Teen Vogue reported. The next year, he and Kloss participated in the March for Our Lives gun-control demonstration, with Kloss posting a photo of herself on Instagram, holding a sign that read, "Load minds not guns."

Kloss became engaged to Kushner in the spring, after they had been dating since she was 19 and they met at a dinner party. They kept their engagement private for a month before Kloss revealed it in an Instagram post in June.

But when Ivanka Trump posted a congratulatory comment on Kloss' social-media announcement, saying she was "blessed" to have Kloss as her "sister," the rumor mill began churning, according to Vogue.

For one thing, people wondered whether Kloss would convert to Orthodox Judaism like Ivanka Trump did before marrying Jared Kushner. And people couldn't help but ask, how close are Kloss and Ivanka Trump?

Kloss wouldn't go near to answering these questions in her Vogue interview. All she would say is that she understands why they come up, even though it's "frustrating" that she gets less attention for her career than for her relationship. But she accepts the "complications" that come with marrying a man with a tangential connection to the Trump family.

"At the end of the day, I've had to make decisions based on my own moral compass -- forget what the public says, forget social media," she said. "I've chosen to be with the man I love despite the complications. It's frustrating, to be honest, that the spotlight is always shifted away from my career toward my relationship. I don't think the same happens in conversations with men."

The main purpose of the interview was for Kloss to talk about the Kode for Klossy summer camps for teenage girls she founded. The computer coding camps are for teenage girls interested in tech careers; Kloss became interested in coding after taking a class at New York University. In the interview, she said she had been math and science nerd as a girl who once dreamed of being a pediatrician before she got into modeling.

"We've really grown together personally and professionally," said Kloss. "Josh knows that I'm just a nerdy, curious human being. I think that's why he loves me. We have each other's back."
