Immigration reform can help solve the worker shortage

To the editor: It really gets tiring to read over and over about the worker shortages, and yet no one seems to say an obvious solution: Get a good comprehensive immigration policy, and we could get many people willing and able to work. Contact your members of both houses of Congress and insist they come up with a plan. This stagnation has gone on way way too long.

We send them to Congress to work on our behalf; now let us insist that they do.

To the editor: I am responding to "What comes next?" by Sally Helmer on January 4. Helmer says inflation is not because of Putin or the war in Ukraine or greedy businesses raising prices. She blames the Federal Reserve, calls it a private bank that is a group of unelected officials who literally own the entire financial system. Well, I don’t know of any private bank that has its officers appointed by the president of the United States and confirmed by the Senate as it should be because the average voter thinks the Federal Reserve is a national park. I think the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, Consumer Finance Protection Bureau, Securities and Exchange Commission, and the Treasury would argue that the Federal Reserve owns the financial system.

Putin’s war has cost the world onefifth of its corn and barley supply, two-thirds of its sunflower oil, a quarter of its wheat and 12% of its crude oil (ourworldindata.org). Oh, did I mention Exxon’s profits for 2022 were up 110% (macrotrends.net)? I think this explains inflation and why it’s global and a lot worse overseas than in the U.S. The rest of the letter on digital currency was conjecture; I have no comment.

She closes with the question: Do you miss Trump? Answer: a resounding NO.

Hanson’s whining getting old

To the editor: Thank you to The Freeman for printing Victor Davis Hanson’s last column last Friday ("The coup we never knew").

In just a few thousand words of whining, Mr. Hanson has succeeded in listing every possible complaint that old, privileged white guys such as the two of us have been sputtering about for years. Now that the list has been completed, we no longer need to use every moment of conversation boring our friends and others repeating our sense of grievance.

For myself, I feel positively relieved. Since Hanson has finally finished, The Freeman no longer needs to print his columns.

Does anyone have anything positive to say or write, or print in your paper?

Ability to read cursive is important

To the editor: Regarding Adam Carrington’s essay on the application of George Washington’s "Rules of Civility and Decent Behavior," he states that we have this list "in his (Washington’s) own handwriting." All the documents that define the founding of our nation including the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution and the Bill of Rights were written in the Founders’ own handwriting.

Being able to read these documents in their original form is important. That’s one reason I support continuing to teach cursive writing in our schools.

I know a young woman who just graduated magna cum laude from one of the University of Wisconsin campuses who was unable to read a message of congratulations written in cursive by her relative. I think that’s more than unfortunate.
