Hurliman receives Quilt of Valor

Shelton Herald (CT)

Hurliman receives Quilt of Valor

The Sarah Riggs Humphreys-Mary Silliman Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution presented its handmade Quilt of Valor to Joel Hurliman outside at the Sutter-Terlizzi American Legion Post 16 during a Veterans Day ceremony.

Regent Jeaneen Buchanan, one of the quilters, said Veterans Day is an appropriate opportunity to show appreciation for the service and sacrifice of those who serve the nation.

Hurliman has more than 35 years of law enforcement experience and was Shelton police chief until his retirement in 2015. He was a master sergeant in the Connecticut Army National Guard for 23 years. He currently serves as major in the Second Company Governor's Foot Guard.

Marion Osborne and Linda Papp, two of the quilters, wrapped the Quilt of Valor over the shoulders of Hurliman as he was presented with a Quilt of Valor certificate.

The DAR perpetuates the memory and spirit of the men and women who won American independence. Any woman who is lineally descended from an ancestor who aided the patriot cause during the American Revolution may be eligible to join. The DAR is a nonprofit lineage society focused on historical preservation, community education and patriotism. For more information visit www.sarahriggshumphreysDAR.org

Shelton receives $563K grant

Shelton received a state grant for $563,000 to be used on downtown accessibility improvements.

City officials said the grant will be used to install pedestrian ramps that are compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act throughout the downtown corridor. This project complements and furthers the city's commitment to Complete Streets including bike and pedestrian safety and ADA transition plans.

Gov. Ned Lamont and Transportation Commissioner Garrett Eucalitto last week announced that the Connecticut Department of Transportation was awarding $11.7 million in grants to 17 towns and cities across Connecticut under the state-funded Community Connectivity Grant Program.

Now in its fifth round of awards, the program is an infrastructure improvement initiative that provides funding for local projects that improve safety and accessibility for pedestrians, bicyclists and transit users in urban, suburban and rural communities.

Municipalities that have been selected to receive grants will be expected to complete the project within three years.

Huntington Congregational Church's annual Pumpkin and Holly Fair will be held from 5:30 to 8 p.m. on Nov. 17 and 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Nov. 18.

Items are crafted by church members. Purchases help support the work and missions of the HCC Women's Fellowship.
