Holmes County says its prepared for a coronavirus surge

Daily Record, The (Wooster, OH)

MILLERSBURG — As part of a county-wide initiative, the Holmes County Emergency Operations Center (HCEOC), in collaboration with the Holmes County Emergency Management Agency, Holmes County Health District, Holmes County Fire and Sheriff’s departments and Pomerene Hospital are coordinating precautionary planning efforts to prepare for any potential surge in demand for medical and related services as a result of any increases in local Coronavirus/COVID-19 cases.

A medical “surge” is defined as a rapid increase in the demand for health-care services which may exceed the typical day-to-day demand. The Holmes County Emergency Operations Center (HCEOC) is working with several local agencies to monitor sudden changes in demand for medical and other public safety services.

Emergency preparedness planning may be seen on the campus of Pomerene Hospital as it constructs temporary structures that may be used to facilitate an increase in patients going to the hospital and or the Emergency Department. The temporary structures are a routine component of the hospital’s overall emergency planning procedures.

If enacted, the hospital will be able to increase its capacity for providing emergency related services for the public. The HCEOC remains vigilant towards keeping current on the evolving conditions pertaining to Coronavirus/COVID-19 at the local, state and national level, according to Deputy Clerk Bob Sigler. Holmes County is in contact with surrounding county emergency management services, local and regional hospitals.

The HCEOC wants to remind the community the best way to protect yourself and others from the spread of Coronavirus/COVID-19 is to practice social distancing, washing your hands often, staying home if sick, covering coughs and sneezes and cleaning and disinfecting frequently touched surfaces often.

In addition, it is recommended to avoid large group gatherings of 10 or more people such as weddings, funerals and church services if possible. By adhering to these important guidelines, you can make a positive impact on the potential spread of the Coronavirus/COVID-19 to your family, friends and neighbors.

On March 29, President Trump extended recommendations to limit groups to 10 people or less until May 1 as COVID-19/coronavirus spreads throughout the country. The Holmes County General Health District (HCGHD) asks that Holmes County residents follow this recommendation to the greatest extent possible.

In addition, HCGHD highly recommends churches find alternate ways to worship and that residents choose to have private ceremonies for weddings and funerals now and larger celebrations and memorial services later. It is important for the safety of all people in Holmes County that everyone in the community follows these recommendations.

The HCEOC will continue to provide briefings to the public. Residents with questions related to COVID-19 should call the Ohio Department of Health Call Center, 1-833-4-ASKODH. Information is available online at www.holmeshealth.org.
