High-speed chase ends in accident, arrest

Hawk Eye, The (Burlington, IA)

April 11-- Apr. 11--A Burlington man is facing numerous charges following a high-speed chase Saturday that ended in a rollover accident on U.S. 34.

According to court documents, Dymond Dakar Green, 25, 2303 Flint Hills Drive, allegedly led police on a high-speed chase through town after he failed to pull over in the area of Flint Hills Drive and Division Street.

Officers initially attempted to conduct a traffic stop after the Chevrolet Traverse Green allegedly was driving ran a stop sign on Shield Street. Police followed the Traverse westbound on Division Street toward Roosevelt Avenue, where it blew past red lights and continued to travel south at speeds of more than 80 miles per hour.

The vehicle then turned east on Mason Road, continuing to travel at high rates of speed. The Traverse hopped a curb on Mason Road and Harrison Avenue before turning north on South Garfield Avenue, then traveled west on Spray Street, jumping the median and sidewalk as it did so, before heading south on South Plane Street.

The vehicle then turned west on West Avenue and continued to travel at speeds exceeding 90 miles per hour before getting back on Roosevelt Avenue and heading for Howard Street before turning back onto Mason Road, then back on Roosevelt Avenue.

In an effort to evade police, the driver of the vehicle pulled into a private parking lot on Lawrence Drive, then jumped a curb and ran through a ditch back onto Roosevelt, where it weaved in and out of traffic while traveling north. It was at that point officers lost sight of the vehicle.

Soon after, however, officers were alerted to a rollover accident in the area of U.S. 34 and Roosevelt Avenue.

The driver had fled the vehicle on foot, but witnesses pointed police toward the off ramp. The driver of the vehicle, later identified as Green, was taken into custody.

Officers found a knot-tied baggie containing 2.8 grams of marijuana in the path Green had taken in his attempt to flee the scene. Green was taken to Great River Medical Center for treatment of his injuries before being arrested and taken to the Des Moines County jail, where he was charged with driving under suspension, stop sign violations, felony eluding, reckless driving, possession of a controlled substance and not having insurance. He also was charged on a Lee County warrant with probation violation.
