Hamden police warn of potential scams following tornado
New Haven Register (CT)
May 18--HAMDEN -- The Hamden Police Department warned residents of potential scams in the wake of Tuesday's tornado, which caused widespread damage in the community.
Capt. Ronald Smith said residents should keep a series of precautions in mind when looking to hire a contractor.
These included: asking contractors for proper ID, a business card, proof of disability and workers' compensation insurance, and well as requesting a written contract that names the work to be completed, the cost, and a payment schedule.
"Resist any attempts by the contractor that forces you to make a quick decision," said Smith in the release. "NEVER pay more than a third of the costs up front. NEVER PAY IN CASH."
"With regards to telephone solicitations, homeowners are urged to donate to charities that they know and trust," said Smith.
The town announced Thursday that more than 500 trees had come down in Northern Hamden during the storm.
"I want to express my thanks to all the Public Works and Public Safety staff, our CERT volunteers, who are helping our residents during this natural disaster that has caused very serious damage to the town and many homes, with over 500 trees having come down in the northern area of town," Mayor Curt B. Leng said in a statement on Facebook.
