Growing Payouts From America’s Top Health Insurers

HELENA, Mont., Aug. 8 -- National Institute on Money in State Politics issued the following news release:
The eight largest health insurance companies have increased their contributions to candidates, and decreased their giving to political parties. The National Institute on Money in State Politics found that UnitedHealth, Anthem, Humana, Aetna, Cigna, Health Net, Centene, and Molina, and their subsidiaries, collectively gave $12.3 million to federal candidates in the last four election cycles, and $18.6 million to state candidates.
Why give to candidates? Because they may become the lawmakers who author state or federal tax bills. Watchdogs would do well to look for big health industry tax benefits crafted into tax legislation.
