The Governor also secured major auto insurance reforms in the FY27 Enacted Budget to combat fraud and reduce costs for consumers. Those reforms include provisions allowing prosecutors to seek criminal penalties against individuals who organize staged accidents not only the individuals behind the wheel providing law enforcement with another tool to target the organizers of sophisticated fraud schemes.
The reforms also address other factors driving auto insurance costs by limiting certain damages available to individuals engaged in unlawful behavior at the time of an accident, tightening standards governing serious injury claims, limiting recoveries when individuals are primarily responsible for causing an accident and strengthening State oversight of insurance rates and excess insurer profits.
