GISD keeps property casualty insurance at Plano company
Gainesville Daily Register (TX)
Aug. 03--The Gainesville Independent School District's property casualty insurance premium could increase about 15 percent for the upcoming year.
Members of the Gainesville ISD's Board of Directors agreed last month to extend the district's contract with Plano-based Scarbrough, Medlin & Associates Inc. even though the company is predicting the increase.
Interim Superintendent Larry Smith said the district entered an agreement with the company last year. They were the lowest of the two submitted proposals with a premium of $145,278.
The other vendor, the Texas Association of School Boards Risk Management fund, proposed a premium of $183,120, according to information provided to board members.
As a part of last year's agreement with Scarbrough, Medlin & Associates, they have a two-year extension possibility, Smith said.
He said the increase to the premium is due to "the hurricanes and all the other bad weather they've had on the coast."
With the increase, the district's premium will be raised to $167,069.
"Which is still quite a bit lower than what TASB was quoting us last year," Smith said.
Gainesville ISD's last property claim was on Aug.13, 2016, for $6,032, according to Alyce Greer, the district's director of finance. It was for lightning damage at Gainesville Junior High.
Greer said next year will be Scarbrough, Medlin & Associates final extension opportunity. The district will have to go out for new bids in the 2020-21 school year.
