Former KC Fed leader is given a Truman honor

The Truman Library Institute will host the Truman Medal for Economic Policy award ceremony Oct. 10 at the Plaza Branch of the Kansas City Public Library.

This year's medal winner is Thomas Hoenig, former longtime president of the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City.

The free event begins at 6:30 p.m., with a reception starting at 6 p.m. The award ceremony also will be streamed online. Reservations are encouraged, and people can visit www.trumanlibraryinstitute.com to make a reservation, either for an in-person ticket or to receive a link for the online stream.

Following the award presentation, Hoenig will speak about "The Components of a Resilient Economy," according to the institute.

Hoenig is a distinguished senior fellow at the Mercatus Center at George Mason University. He was the president of the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City from 1991 to 2011. He first joined the Fed in Kansas City in 1973.

In a release, the institute noted that Hoenig became well known for his views on the "too big to fail" issue. After Hoenig retired from the Fed, President Obama nominated him to be vice chairman of the board of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation.

The Truman Medal for Economic Policy, one of several awards named for the country's 33rd president, is awarded biennially. It is sponsored by the Truman Library Institute, the Henry W. Bloch School of Management, University of Missouri–Kansas City, the Economic Club of Kansas City, and the Missouri Council on Economic Education.

Previous Truman Medal honorees include Federal Reserve or Treasury Department leaders Roger Ferguson, Alan Greenspan, George P. Shultz, Paul A. Volcker and Janet Yellen.
