Firefighters douse fire in Mooers

Press-Republican (Plattsburgh, NY)

Oct. 29--MOOERS -- Fire damaged a business in the Town of Mooers Wednesday night.

The property at 196 Davison Road is owned by Wayne Dupee.

Formerly a two-story home, it had been converted to an unattached garage and shop that housed his business, Wayne's Construction and RV Service.

FLAMED BY WIND

Mooers Fire Chief Dan Dumas said the fire was reported by Dupee at 9:33 p.m. He reportedly was using a generator that was vented through a wall during a power outage, which caused the wall to catch fire.

Dumas said the building featured a balloon-type construction, which helped the fire spread through a back corner and into the roof area.

The flames were also spread by the heavy winds that whipped through the region last night.

The Mooers Fire Department responded, assisted by crews from Hemmingford Fire Department and a tanker and crew from Ellenburg Depot Fire Department.

Clinton County Car 4 was coordinator, and personnel from Champlain EMS were also on site.

A crew from the Champlain Fire Department was on standby at Mooers Fire Station 1.

"We had a good response," Dumas said. "We had a good save, considering how strong the winds were."

WATER DAMAGE

Dumas said he believes some of the equipment in the business is salvageable, but much of it sustained water damage.

He said Dupee indicated he had at least some insurance coverage.

The garage/workshop is about 200 feet from Dupee's residence. There was never any danger the fire would spread to that structure, Dumas said.

Mooers Fire Department was back in the station by 11:09 p.m., with the last firefighters heading home around midnight.
