Nov. 29--KEOKUK -- A home jhere was damaged Monday night when a fire broke out near a kitchen appliance.
Keokuk firefighters responded to the structure fire at 1225 Bank St., about one block away from the fire station, shortly after 10:45 p.m. Monday. Two adults and one child were home when the fire broke out, but they were able to escape without injury.
Fire Chief Gabe Rose said firefighters had the blaze under control within five minutes, noting the structure's close proximity to the fire station allowed for quick response time.
The fire damage was mostly contained to one room, though another room of the house sustained moderate smoke and water damage.
Rose said the fire, which began near a coffee maker, has been ruled accidental, though it is unclear whether it started because of the appliance or faulty wiring.
"All indicators point back to either the device or wiring there," Rose said.
Because of the damage in the area, however, it cannot be determined which was at fault without extensive lab work. Typically, such work only is done in cases of suspicious fires or arson.
The family did not have insurance, but the Red Cross is providing them with assistance.
