Financial Literacy Program Takes Hold in Community Colleges

By a News Reporter-Staff News Editor at Investment Weekly News -- The American Financial Services Association Education Foundation (AFSAEF) presented its MoneySKILL® program at the just-concluded American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) annual meeting held during a session entitled Effective Financial Literacy Strategies for Community College Students.

The presentation was given by MoneySKILL Director David Casserly, along with Kelly Hunter Markson, Ph.D. Professor, Business Administration, Wake Technical Community College, an AACC member and MoneySKILL educator.

The AACC annual meeting is among the largest and most dynamic gatherings of educational leaders, attracting over 3,000 community college presidents and senior administrators, as well as international educators, representatives of business/industry, and federal agencies.

Casserly and Hunter Markson laid out the MoneySKILL curriculum and showed how its many features could help community colleges nationwide educate their students about the importance of financial literacy. Hunter Markson also shared her experiences using the MoneySKILL curriculum and the positive effect it has had on her students at Wake Technical Community College in Raleigh, NC.

As community colleges become an increasingly important part of the educational landscape in the United States, the presentation represents important outreach for AFSAEF and opens the possibility to an entirely new audience for its innovative and content-rich MoneySKILL program.

MoneySKILL® is a free online personal finance course covering income, expenses, saving and investing, credit and insurance. There are now teachers from all 50 states and several foreign countries that have enrolled more than 700,000 students in the junior high, high school, and college modules, as well as the several AFSA member companies.
