Failed fraud, driveaway driver, frog fracas| San Juan County Sheriffs Log

The San Juan County Sheriff's Department responded to the following calls.

Oct. 19

• A San Juan deputy stopped the driver of a vehicle and issued them a citation for speeding, 69 mph in a posted 45 mph speed zone.

• A deputy responded to a report of fraud on San Juan. An unknown individual emailed the victim's payroll and attempted to switch bank accounts for the next pay period. No identifying information was in the email.

• A deputy took a report concerning credit card fraud. A Lopez citizen was notified by their bank that an online order was placed using their credit card. It was flagged as fraudulent. No money was lost.

• In Friday Harbor, a deputy stopped the driver of a vehicle for expired registration and issued them a citation for expired registration and operating a motor vehicle without insurance.

• A San Juan deputy responded to and documented a report of a hit-and-run collision though the time the incident occurred is unknown.

• A San Juan deputy stopped the driver of a vehicle for traveling 57 mph in a posted 45 mph speed zone. The driver was issued citations for speeding, not having a valid license with ID and not having registration in the vehicle.

Oct. 20

• A San Juan deputy responded to a report of found property. The owner of the property was contacted and the wallet was returned.

• A San Juan deputy responded to a report of a found E-bike. The bike was reported stolen in September and was entered into evidence. No suspect information was available at the time.

• An Orcas deputy responded to a parking problem that ended up being a case of trespassing.

• A deputy responded to and investigated a theft that occurred in Eastsound.

• An Orcas deputy authored an incident/courtesy report for a non-injury traffic collision that occurred on private property on Crescent Beach Road.

• A Lopez deputy stopped the driver of a vehicle traveling 24 mph over the speed limit. The driver spoke briefly with the deputy, then drove away mid-contact without providing documentation. The officer submitted probable cause for eluding a felony, in addition to traffic violations.

Oct. 21

• A San Juan deputy was contacted about an item in the roadway which was ultimately entered into evidence.

• A deputy was contacted for a citizen assist. The person wanted another person trespassed from their property and signed a trespass warning letter to be served.

• An Orcas deputy responded to a report of trespassing. The trespasser was contacted and later taken into custody for evaluation.

• A deputy investigated and completed a report about a two-vehicle non-injury collision on Lopez.

• A Lopez deputy received multiple calls about a speeding vehicle. Once the vehicle was located a short time later, the driver was issued a citation for operating without motor vehicle insurance.

• A citizen on Lopez turned in a marine box to the sheriff's office. The box was found on Center Road and contained a boat registration amongst other nautical items.

• A deputy took a report of a lost cell phone on San Juan. The owner was contacted and the phone was returned.

• A deputy on San Juan responded to a single-vehicle roll-over collision. In a no-passing zone, the suspect vehicle attempted to pass a vehicle that had slowed for frogs crossing the road and lost control hitting the embankment and rolling over. The driver was issued citations for passing in a no-passing zone.

• San Juan deputies responded to a request for a welfare check. Contacted parties were assisted as needed and no criminal activity was reported or noted.

Oct. 22

• San Juan deputies responded to a report of a domestic incident. Investigation revealed probable cause to arrest one of the parties for assault 4th degree-domestic violence. The suspect was booked into jail to await a court hearing.

• A deputy was dispatched to a single-vehicle traffic accident on San Juan. The deputy arrived and located a single vehicle off the roadway, and issued the driver a citation for not having insurance, for wheels off the roadway, and for failure to transfer the title.

• A deputy responded to a parking problem on San Juan. Three vehicles were parked partially on a sidewalk blocking the view for vehicles entering the roadway. The drivers were contacted and advised to move their vehicles.

• A deputy on San Juan took a report of a found lost wallet. The owner was contacted and retrieved the item.

Oct. 23

• An Orcas deputy investigated a solo vehicle collision on Orcas Road. The driver of the vehicle involved in the collision was subsequently arrested for driving under the influence.

• A deputy was dispatched to a single-vehicle traffic accident on San Juan. The deputy arrived and found a single vehicle in the ditch and no one with the car. Attempts to contact the registered owner failed and the vehicle was impounded.

• A deputy on San Juan responded to a report of a civil issue that involved a survey marker that was removed from private property. There is no evidence of who took the marker and the incident was documented.

• A deputy on Orcas responded to an animal-at-large call near North Beach. The dog was located and taken to the shelter. The owner contacted the shelter, arranged to pick up the dog, and received a citation since they had received many warnings and a warning letter.

• A deputy on San Juan responded to a report of a possible hit and run that occurred sometime in the night prior. A vehicle drove through a section of fence off of Douglas Road. There are no workable leads or suspects at this time.

• A deputy took a report of a stolen bicycle on San Juan. The bicycle was returned to the owner's residence while they were at the sheriff's office. The deputy attempted to contact the reporting party multiple times to obtain photos and video evidence but the reporting party did not answer.•

Oct. 24

• A deputy was dispatched to an assault in Friday Harbor. After all the people involved were contacted, it was determined that no crime was committed.

• A Lopez resident reported the theft of mail. It appears unrelated to the spree of mail thefts in September.

• A deputy responded to a welfare check on San Juan. The deputy spoke with the person involved who was found not to be in need of any medical or law enforcement assistance and was put in contact with a counselor.

• A deputy responded to a complaint of a parking problem on San Juan. A vehicle had been parked on the side of the road in excess of 72 hours. The vehicle was tagged with a 72-hour notice to move.

• A deputy on Orcas issued a ticket for a violation of San Juan County Code 10.28.010 - Mooring at a Public Landing.

• A deputy on San Juan responded to a report of a dog-at-large. The deputy took custody of the dog and returned the dog to its home. A citation for a dog-at-large, third offense will be mailed to the owner.

• A Lopez deputy was told about a threats incident on a ferry. Both parties are involved in a pending court case. The incident was documented; charges may follow.

• Along with EMS, deputies on San Juan responded to the jail for an in-custody individual who requested medical attention. The individual was transported by a deputy to the hospital for an evaluation, where they were cleared to return to jail.

Oct. 25

• A citizen on Orcas spoke to sheriff's office personnel regarding relationship issues. At this point, no reported criminal actions had occurred and an informational report was completed.

• Along with Orcas Fire and EMS personnel, deputies responded to a single-vehicle collision. One person was flown off the island with unknown injuries.

• A deputy on Orcas responded to a citizen assist.

• A lost debit card was found on Orcas and turned over to a deputy. The owner could not be located, and the card was booked into the evidence room.
