Clover Health stock drops on Q2 report release

William WilliamsNashville Post

Shares of Clover Health Investments plummeted more than 20 percent at one point Wednesday afternoon, a day after the Franklin-based health insurance company reported second-quarter results.

At publication time, the stock (ticker: CLOV) was priced at $2.30, down 19.12 percent (the equivalent drop of $0.54 per share). Volume was heavy as about 23.3 million shares had traded. The daily average for the stock, which trades on the Nasdaq stock exchange, is about 8.87 million, according to Yahoo Finance.

Online market information websites Zacks Equity Research and StockStory report the stock dive might be attributed to investor concerns regarding the 88.4 percent increase in the insurance benefits expense ratio (BER), a major metric showing the portion of premiums spent on medical care.

On Tuesday, Clover released second-quarter results showing revenues of $477.6 million, up 34.1 percent compared to the mark of Q2 2024 but missing the Zacks consensus estimate of analysts figure by 1 percent.

Clover reported Q2 earnings per share (EPS) of $0.03, topping the $0.01 mark of the same period from last years. The EPS mark was in line with the Zacks consensus estimate.

StockStory reports that Clover Health's having raised its forecast for the full-year BER suggests higher premium portion costs could continue. Of note, UBS analysts cut their price target for the company's stock.

Marketing itself as a tech-enabled Medicare Advantage insurance company, Clover announced on June 30 its inclusion in the Russell 3000 Index (read here). The announcement juiced the stock price at the time.

For the quarter, Clover, moved its headquarters to Cool Springs from California's Silicon Valley in January 2021, saw 2025 Medicare Advantage membership of 106,323, up 32 percent year-over-year.

"Our second quarter 2025 results reflect significant membership and revenue growth, along with sustained adjusted net income and adjusted EBITDA profitability," Clover Health CFO Peter Kuipers said in the company release. "We are executing our growth strategy well, and have generated significant momentum in our business this year … ."

Clover stock began the year priced at $3.17 per share.
