Cloquet takes second place at Personal Finance Decathlon State Championship

May 08--Cloquet Senior High School took second place at the Minnesota State Personal Finance Decathlon Championship on April 28 at the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis. Mounds View High School took first place.

After a very competitive final quiz bowl round against Mounds View High School, Cloquet students Gabe Berg, Isaac Blinn, Austin Nelson and Christian Pritchett took second place. A second team of Cloquet students placed 11th. Both teams were coached by Cloquet Senior High teacher Tim Prosen.

Sixty-six teams from across Minnesota competed online for the opportunity to be invited to the state championships. Cloquet faced teams from Albany High School, Armstrong High School, Lake Crystal Wellcome Memorial, Mounds View High School, Roseau High School, and Valley View Middle School in the state finals. Mounds View High School also placed third, and Valley View Middle School placed fourth.

The winning team will travel to Kansas City, Mo., to compete in the national competition on May 22. The national championship is organized by the Missouri Council on Economic Education with support Wells Fargo Foundation.

The Personal Finance Decathlon is designed to test student knowledge of personal finance in the areas of earning income, paying taxes, budgeting, saving, financial planning, investing, borrowing, banking and financial institutions, insuring, and thinking economically.

The eighth annual Personal Finance Decathlon was organized by the Minnesota Council on Economic Education, and made possible through funding from Affinity Plus Federal Credit Union, COUNTRY Financial, Sit Investment Associates, and the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis. The purpose of the contest is to honor and reward student achievement in understanding personal finance and to showcase outstanding personal finance education programs among Minnesota high schools.
