Center for Reproductive Rights Statement on Leaked Trump Plan to Restrict Women’s Access to Contraception

NEW YORK, May 31 -- The Center for Reproductive Rights issued the following news release:

The Center for Reproductive Rights issued the following statement after news outlets reported that the Trump administration is planning to issue an interim final rule which would restrict access to birth control through the Affordable Care Act.

"Today's leaked draft rule is just the latest effort by the Trump administration to roll back access to health care services," said Nancy Northup, president and CEO of the Center for Reproductive Rights. "Birth control gives women the ability to plan their pregnancies, and it's unconscionable to allow any employer or university to use religious or moral beliefs to deny women access to basic health care.

"This draft rule would rob women of their ability to control their lives and futures. And the Center for Reproductive Rights is ready to fight back in court if the Trump administration finalizes this rule."

If today's draft rules were to take effect, hundreds of thousands of women could lose access to insurance coverage for contraception. Specifically, the draft rules would create a broad exemption that would enable employers, health insurance providers, and universities to claim a religious or moral objection and deny their employees and students coverage for contraception.
