Aug. 17--CareSource, a downtown Dayton-based nonprofit health insurer, has been awarded a statewide contract to provide support for former prisoners with substance abuse or behavioral health issues who are re-entering the community from Ohio prisons.
Through the Community Transition Program offered by Ohio Mental Health and Addiction Services, CareSource will provide access to housing resources, vocational services, peer support and other nontraditional recovery services for as many as 6,000 individuals who will be eligible for the program as they leave the 28 prisons in the state of Ohio, according to a release.

The Community Transitions Program is the first of its kind in Ohio and will provide improved continuity of care, and new services to an under-served population, according to CareSource.
"Each year, Ohio sees individuals placed in prisons with documented substance abuse disorders or behavioral health issues. We know that with the proper opportunities, care and treatment, we can partner with state leaders and our health and social service providers to break the cycle of incarceration that many of them are in." said Jonas Thom, vice president of behavioral health at CareSource. "CareSource has a unique opportunity with the Community Transition Program to help these individuals overcome their addictions and regain control of their lives."
