Canton businesses receive next batch of disaster recovery funds
Journal Star (Peoria, IL)
Dec. 30--CANTON -- A total of $55,400 was doled out Thursday by the Canton Disaster Recovery Fund Committee to 17 businesses affected by the Nov. 16 gas explosion in the city's downtown square.
Funds can be used for building material and labor costs; replacing inventory or equipment; payroll or bill assistance; paying an insurance deductible; reimbursement for business interruption; or other uses that are approved on a case-by-case basis.
A third -- and likely final -- round of funding will be disbursed on Jan. 19, though the amount awarded will depend upon the donations received. Applications for any business affected by the explosion remain open through the close of business on Jan. 17. Application forms are available online at cantonillinois.org or in person on the second floor of the Canton City Building, 2 North Main.
The disaster relief effort was launched by the Spoon River Partnership for Economic Development and the Canton Area Chamber of Commerce. The Community Foundation of Central Illinois is acting as the pass-through agency for the donations, but the awards to businesses are made by the Spoon River Partnership.
Donations to the relief fund can be made online at www.communityfoundationci.org or by check to the Community Foundation of Central Illinois, with Canton Disaster Recovery Fund noted in the memo line, and may be dropped at the Canton branches of MidAmerica National Bank, CEFCU, Ipava State Bank and the Bank of Farmington.
