July 21--A Calhoun County sheriff's deputy was recovering from whiplash and minor injuries on Friday after an Oklahoma man wrecked his Jeep into a patrol SUV, officials said.
Oxford police Capt. L.G. Owens said the wreck happened shortly before 8:30 p.m. at the intersection of U.S. 78 East and Jimmy Hinton Drive. Owens said Bradley Wayne Cult, 48, of Inola, Okla., ran his 2006 Jeep Liberty into the deputy's Ford Explorer on the passenger side.
"It knocked him around and we sent him to the emergency room, but we're glad he wasn't seriously injured," Calhoun County Sheriff Matthew Wade said Friday morning.
Oxford police were near the site of the scene prior to the wreck helping to direct traffic rerouted around an eight-vehicle pile up on Interstate 20, Wade said.
"So they actually witnessed it," Wade said of the Oxford police officers.
Owens said Cult was charged with driving under the influence of a controlled substance and second-degree possession of marijuana. He remained in Oxford City Jail on Friday, Owens said, with a combined $1,000 bond.
While Wade said he's glad he didn't lose a deputy, he is down a patrol vehicle.
"It kind of puts us in a bind, and it was fairly new," he said. "I was told, though, that the guy has insurance, so hopefully we'll be able to get it fixed soon."
