Bloomberg BNA Presents 2016 Estates, Gifts and Trusts Author Awards to Gideon Rothschild, Daniel S. Rubin and David A. Handler

PR Newswire

ARLINGTON, Va., Feb. 27, 2017 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Bloomberg BNA announced that Gideon Rothschild, Daniel S. Rubin and David A. Handler are the recipients of its 2016 Estates, Gifts and Trusts Author Awards, which were presented at the Heckerling Institute on Estate Planning conference in Orlando. Rothschild and Rubin were honored as Outstanding Portfolio Authors, and Handler was recognized as Outstanding Estates, Gifts and Trusts Contributing Author.

Rothschild and Rubin co-authored a Portfolio on asset protection planning, which provides an in-depth analysis of asset protection trusts and other entities in various domestic and foreign jurisdictions. It examines traditional techniques utilized in rudimentary preservation planning, as well as the traps and pitfalls associated with those techniques. This approach makes the Portfolio particularly useful to practitioners looking at all levels of asset protection planning.

Rothschild is the chair of Moses & Singer's Trusts and Estates and Asset Protection practices and is a nationally-recognized authority on domestic and cross-border estate planning strategies for wealth preservation and asset protection. He is a Fellow of the American College of Trust & Estate Counsel and is the former Chair of the ABA's Real Property Trust & Estate Law Section.

Rubin is a partner in Moses & Singer's Trusts and Estates and Asset Protection practice groups in New York, concentrating on domestic and international estate and asset protection planning for high-net-worth individuals. He is a Fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel and is the incoming chair of the College's Asset Protection committee.

Handler received the award as Outstanding Estates, Gifts and Trusts Contributing Author for an article in which he specified and compared the pros and cons of financed sales of assets to grantor trusts with outright net gifts coupled with financing of the gift tax liabilities. Using concrete examples contemplating various investment performance and interest rate scenarios, he showed how net gifts can often provide superior results in terms of total wealth transferred while also carrying fewer risks for the client.  The article served to challenge the well-known intentionally defective grantor trust (IDGT) technique and provided a practical alternative that can provide clients with better results at lower cost.

Handler is a partner in the Trusts and Estates Practice Group of the law firm Kirkland & Ellis in Chicago. He concentrates his practice on various aspects of trust and estate planning and administration and tax-exempt entities. A frequent speaker, Handler is a Fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel and was named a Trusts & Estates Trailblazer by The National Law Journal in 2016.

"Gideon, Daniel, and David have made invaluable contributions to the rich compendium of resources — which includes research, planning and implementation tools coupled with analysis — that we provide practitioners to help them develop and implement optimal strategies for their clients," said George Farrah, Editorial Director, Bloomberg BNA's Tax & Accounting division. "We are privileged to work with esteemed practitioners, such as Gideon, Daniel, and David, who offer expert analysis and practical insights into emerging issues in the dynamic area of estates and trusts."
