NEW YORK (AP) _ Assurant Inc. (AIZ) on Tuesday reported first-quarter net income of $145.5 million.
On a per-share basis, the New York-based company said it had net income of $2.59. Earnings, adjusted for non-recurring costs, were $3.75 per share.
The results topped Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of five analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of $2.86 per share.
The insurer posted revenue of $2.48 billion in the period. Its adjusted revenue was $2.55 billion, which missed Street forecasts. Four analysts surveyed by Zacks expected $2.6 billion.
Assurant shares have risen 17% since the beginning of the year, while the S&P's 500 index has decreased 12%. In the final minutes of trading on Tuesday, shares hit $183.08, an increase of 16% in the last 12 months.
