As President Trump doubled down today on the Republican attack on health care - including a dangerous lawsuit in federal court that would scrap the Affordable Care Act and end protections for people with pre-existing conditions - a brand new poll confirmed that voters still don't trust Republicans in Washington to handle health care policy and strongly oppose their policies that would drive costs up and make care less accessible.

Trump's pledge that Republicans are "going for the rest" of the health care law comes as vulnerable incumbents scramble to rewrite their records - like North Carolina's Thom Tillis, who introduced a sham bill that's been slammed as a "false promise," dismissed as self-serving "political cover," and "falls far short" of actually protecting people with pre-existing conditions.

Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee spokesman Stewart Boss issued the following statement:

"Health care is on the ballot in 2020, and Americans have been given plenty of reasons not to trust Republican politicians on this critical issue. Voters are going to reject Republican Senators who have voted in lockstep with their party leaders in Washington to support these toxic plans that spike costs and gut coverage protections for people with pre-existing conditions."

AP-NORC Poll: Democrats are trusted more on health care

* Overall, The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research poll finds that Democrats enjoy a 17 percentage point advantage over Republicans in Americans' assessments of whom they trust more to handle health care, 40% to 23%.

* "As I look at what's going on, there is no question that Democrats are far more structured toward trying to make sure people have health care," said Robert Head, of Lewes, Delaware.

* Head, who's retired from a marketing career for machinery manufacturers, said he was a lifelong Republican who lost faith in the party because of the Iraq War. "I tend to think that health care is a fundamental human right," he added. "The Republicans don't have a plan. All they want to do is block grants back to the states."
