It only took a minute for the firefighter to determine that everyone should get out of the building, he said.
The fire "had a jump" on fire crews that arrived shortly after
Fifteen minutes after firefighters arrived, the roof collapsed.
Luckily, everyone had left the building, and no injuries were reported,
"Definitely it could have been a lot worse," he said.
He said the state fire marshal's office and and the District 7 Fire Investigation Unit were still investigating the cause of the blaze Sunday. The fire is not believed to be suspicious.
"With the amount of people in the building at the time of the fire, we are extremely lucky ... that we did not have any serious injuries and that everyone was able to escape the building quickly," the chief said.
