Aggressive attack saves Ticonderoga home

Press-Republican (Plattsburgh, NY)

Feb. 15--TICONDEROGA -- Great midday response from volunteer firefighters helped contain a fire at a two-story Burgoyne Road home in the Town of Ticonderoga Wednesday, a fire official said.

The pipe of a wood stove in the back kitchen area was close to combustible materials that caught fire, causing flames to extend into the inner and outer wall, Ticonderoga Volunteer Fire Department Third Asst. Chief Mike LaVallie said.

"Fortunately, we were able to mount an aggressive attack on it and stop it right there," he said.

"It was a very good save."

DOZENS RESPONDED

Essex County Dispatch summoned crews to the fire at 110 Burgoyne Road at around 11:12 a.m.

Ticonderoga Fire responded with a tower truck and two engines, while Crown Point and Chilson volunteer fire departments went as mutual aid, LaVallie said.

Lamoille Ambulance Services stood by at the site of the fire, and Putnam fire stood by in Ticonderoga's station.

Around 40 to 45 firefighters total came out to help, LaVallie said.

"It was actually a really good turnout."

INTERIOR ATTACK

Crews used 500 to 800 gallons of water from fire hydrants to douse the flames. Their strategy also involved an interior attack, LaVallie said.

Essex County Air One had to fill six or seven air bottles used by firefighters who went inside, he added.

Weather did not give fire personnel any trouble, with temperatures coming in at around 38 degrees as snow fell on a semi-sunny day.

"We'll take that any day in mid February," LaVallie said.

NOT DISPLACED

Joseph Manning lives at the home with his family, which LaVallie believes includes his wife, mother-in-law, children and several dogs.

His father, Scott Manning, is listed as one of the owners in Essex County Real Property records.

Joseph planned to continue cleaning up his home after crews left so that his family wouldn't be displaced, LaVallie said.

"I think the kids were at school," the assistant chief added.

Ticonderoga code enforcement also responded to the home.

Nobody was hurt in the fire, LaVallie said, and the Mannings do have insurance.

The departments were back in service around 1 p.m.
