AARP Issues Statement on Supreme Court Decision to Review Affordable Care Act Case

WASHINGTON, March 3 -- AARP issued the following statement by Nancy LeaMond executive vice president, chief advocacy and engagement officer, on the Supreme Court's decision to review the case challenging the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act:

"AARP is pleased that the Supreme Court will review the case challenging the ACA. We urge the Court to uphold the ACA by overturning the lower appellate court's decision.

"Millions of Americans have benefited from the ACA's protections against charging older Americans an age tax and prohibitions on discriminating against people who have preexisting health conditions. The ACA has impacted the lives of nearly every American--including older adults who can finally secure affordable health care, Medicare beneficiaries who can more reasonably afford their prescription medications, and people under age 26 who can remain on their parents' insurance.

"A final ruling by the Supreme Court is needed to end years of uncertainty for millions of Americans who worry that they will lose access to critical health care coverage and essential consumer protections. It would also end the uncertainty for insurers and state and local governments who must make advance decisions each year about participating in the ACA Marketplaces and other ACA programs.

"Especially for those with chronic illnesses, health care coverage is essential to their wellbeing, financial resilience, and peace of mind. We respectfully urge the Supreme Court to uphold the central importance of the ACA's coverage and consumer protections for individuals and families as they deliberate this case."
