A Statement From David A. Sampson, President and CEO, American Property Casualty Insurance Association

CHICAGO, Illinois, June 6 -- The American Property Casualty Insurance Association issued the following statement by David A. Sampson:

"As I reflect on the current unrest sweeping across the country in these unsettled times, one thing is clear. The issues we face as a nation are not simply about racial inequality, but also how we express our humanity.

"Whenever injustice occurs, we must immediately address it and speak out. Our nation continues to struggle with bigotry, racism, and discrimination, which stifles the voices of many members of our society and constrains the opportunity of many of our fellow Americans to reach their full potential. We also have a long and cherished history and right to assemble to protect and redress grievances. The challenge to 'form a more perfect union' is the work of every generation. Today, we truly do face a 'hinge of history' moment where the imperative to work together to create a more inclusive, cohesive society is the profound challenge of our age.

"I know how easy it is to become overwhelmed with a sense of helplessness to contribute to positive change and promote healing and reconciliation in times like this. I am reminded of Theodore Roosevelt's admonition: 'Do what you can, with what you have, where you are.' As Americans trying to do good work in our companies and communities, that is as good a place to start as any I know.

"I know I speak for the entire property casualty insurance industry in reaffirming our promise to work within the industry to build the change that is needed, to expand our commitment to equality, and to foster a more diverse and inclusive workforce. This is a journey, and we are committed to doing the work."
