Victims report tax scams, other frauds

The Moultrie Observer, Ga.
By The Moultrie Observer, Ga.
McClatchy-Tribune Information Services

Feb. 22--MOULTRIE -- An annual scam has reared its head again in Moultrie.

Two people -- Chavarius Blackwell, of Dennis Powell Road, and NeKeisha Davis, of Moultrie -- reported to law enforcement this week that their personal information had been used to file income tax returns for other people.

In addition, Antonio Corbin, of Moultrie, reported Wednesday that the IRS audited his 2012 taxes and said he was due a refund of $4,200. Corbin called the IRS when the check did not arrive, and officials told him the check was mailed Jan. 6 and was deposited at Ohio Banking Co. on Jan. 27.

Moultrie police also received unrelated reports of identity fraud from Cornelia Sanders and Doris Green, both of Moultrie. The police report did not make it clear whether those cases had anything to do with tax returns, though.

Violence

Moultrie Police

--Jakate Dontae Thomas, 38, 1709 First Ave. S.E., was charged with aggravated assault after a fight Thursday at his residence.

--A 9-year-old girl was shot in the chest with a BB gun Monday evening. EMS examined her and said the BB didn't penetrate and she appeared to be OK. The incident happened in the area of 10th Avenue and 11th Street Southeast.

--Barry Scott Bennet, 40, 252 Suwanee Road, was charged with disorderly conduct early Friday after he allegedly fought with bartenders at Margarita's Tex-Mex, 525 Veterans Parkway North.

--Leslie Reynolds, 43, 424 Third Ave. N.W., was charged with disorderly conduct Thursday after an altercation with Jaris Henry, of the same address, at their residence.

Sheriff's Office

--Eric Folsom, 143 Southern Court, was charged Wednesday with simple battery (family violence) and cruelty to children.

--Eric Dean Herndon, 48, 1471 Hopewell Church Road, was charged Wednesday with simple battery (family violence).

Thefts

Moultrie Police

--David Cass, of Moultrie, reported Wednesday the theft of a 2000 Ford F-150 valued at $2,000.

--Rico Harris, 200 block Third Street Southwest, reported Feb. 16 someone entered his residence and took a laptop computer, Playstation 2 with a game, HTM Thunderbolt device and two Samsung flip phones. All together, the items were valued at $389.

--Lynn Bennett, of Moultrie, reported Thursday that he left his wallet at Walmart, 641 Veterans Parkway, and when he went back for it, it was gone. The wallet contained $27 in cash and $12 worth of other items.

--Ed Creech, of Tallokas Road, told police Monday that someone had entered an unlocked tool shed under his carport and taken $400 worth of tools.

--Freddie Ponder, of Moultrie, reported Monday that someone had removed the decal from the license plate on his wife's car.

--Sheana Lynn Lucio, of Moultrie, reported Feb. 16 that her purse, mail and a set of keys were missing. She noticed them gone the previous day but had delayed calling law enforcement as she looked to see if she'd mislaid them somewhere else. When she didn't find them, she determined they'd been taken from her car while she was parked at H&R Block, 609 Veterans Parkway, about 2 p.m. on Feb. 15.

--Tim McKee, of Moultrie, reported Thursday that a known male took his checkbook and cashed two checks at a local liquor store.

--John Burdon, of Moultrie, told police Thursday that some older boys took his son's cell phone while he was playing basketball at Northgate Apartments. His son said he'd laid the cell phone, valued at $400, on a bench while he played. He saw the older boys sit on the bench and when they got up he noticed his phone was gone. He confronted the boys, who said they didn't have his phone, and he said he backed off when they became aggressive.

Sheriff's Office

--Michael Scott Snipes, of Rondo Gay Road, reported Wednesday that while he was incarcerated at the Colquitt County Jail, an acquaintance used his workshop with permission. When Snipes got out, he found tools valued at $1,675 missing. Since then, he said, the acquaintance has admitted pawning some of the tools and said other of the tools are still in his possession.

Property damage

Moultrie Police

--Jada Willis, of Moultrie, reported Thursday that her 2011 Hyundai Sonata was damaged in the 1300 block of Summer Circle. The reporting officer said she couldn't tell if someone had backed into the vehicle or hit it with an object.

--Carol Simpson, of Moultrie, reported Monday that her 2008 Nissan Altima had been damaged sometime in the preceding two weeks. She was unsure when or where the damage took place, but she needed a police report for insurance purposes.

Sheriff's Office

--Sally Workman, address unknown, reported she was forced off Tallokas Road by an unknown driver. She lost control, crossed back over the roadway and hit a mailbox in the 3100 block of Tallokas Road. The other driver kept going. No one was hurt, but Workman's 2007 Toyota Tacoma was damaged, as was the mailbox.
