Two arrested for drugs in separate traffic stops [Palestine Herald-Press, Texas]

Oct. 25--PALESTINE --

Two suspects remain in the Anderson County jail on Thursday after being arrested during separate traffic stops for drug-related charges on Wednesday afternoon.

According to Sheriff Greg Taylor, the first stop/arrest occurred at about 2:30 p.m. when ACSO investigators stopped a vehicle traveling on a local county road for a traffic offense.

The vehicle was being driven by 35-year-old Lance Collins of Palestine, who was out of jail on bond from previous drug charges related to his June arrest at a residence near a Westwood ISD school, with bonds totaling $185,000.

"He was initially arrested for driving without a license and no insurance," the sheriff reported. "But during a later search of his vehicle, officers found 6.1 grams of methamphetamine."

In addition to the traffic violations, Collins was arrested for Possession of a Controlled Substance PG1, with a bond set of $1 million.

"His bond was probably set so high because of his already being out on bond," Taylor said.

The second arrest occurred at about 4:40 p.m., when officers made a traffic stop at the intersection of U.S. 84 and Palestine'sLoop 256.

According to Taylor, 51-year-old Rachael Leggett Martin, was taken into custody after being stopped by ACSO officers, who smelled marijuana coming from inside the vehicle.

"She tried to get into her car and take off, and wound up getting tasered for resisting," Taylor said.

During a search of the suspect's vehicle, officers discovered 1.1 gram of methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia under the driver's seat.

Martin was charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance PG1 -- 1-4 grams, $15,000 bond; evading and resisting arrest, $10,000 bond; and for possession of drug paraphernalia, $297 fine.
