The Modesto Bee Patty Guerra column

Patty Guerra, The Modesto Bee
By Patty Guerra, The Modesto Bee
McClatchy-Tribune Information Services

June 07--Maria and Gene Hermosillo want to teach you how to throw a punch.

The couple have opened Modesto Boxing Gym on Kansas Avenue.

Although they have lofty ambitions -- "We're trying to find somebody good to come out of Modesto for the Olympics," Maria Hermosillo said -- the gym is open to nearly everyone.

"It's for all ages, from 5 years old up," she said. "We even have a cardio class for women."

Gene Hermosillo is a longtime trainer and manager who decided to strike out on his own.

Said his wife, "He has a couple of friends that are pros, but it's mainly for the kids."

A grand opening celebration is planned June 28. The gym is at 1027-B Kansas Ave., at Emerald Avenue. Hours are 4 to 9 p.m. weekdays and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays. Go online to www.modestoboxinggym.com or call (209) 402-0475.

ELSEWHERE AROUND THE BUSINESS BEAT:

--The Hermosillos say they have staff that is well-versed in handling any bumps and bruises that may crop up, but for those with a more severe injury or illness, there's a new urgent care operating in downtown Modesto.

California Urgent Care opened Monday at 801 17th St.

"We've seen a few patients, but we have not been very busy yet," said office administrator Emma Quiazon. She said the building that houses the center has been extensively remodeled and updated.

The facility, overseen by medical director and supervising physician Rami Georgies, is open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily. California Urgent Care accepts most insurance as well as self-paying patients.

People are seen on a first-come, first-served basis, but those who register online at www.calurgentcare.com get priority, Quiazon said. Call (209) 846-0725.

--Juline School of Dance has completed its move to the McHenry Village shopping center. The school, celebrating its 40th anniversary, will hold an open house at its new location from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.June 21. Free classes will be available. And on July 26, Juline will host an open house reunion of its dancers from over the years.

Go online to www.julineschoolofdance.com or call (209) 529-2264.

--And finally, with as hot as it's been, what a great time for ice cream. If you live in Ceres, Cold Stone Creamery, which has several locations in our area, is coming to a neighborhood near you. It doesn't matter in which neighborhood you live because the business is mobile.

Kumar and Rani Ahluwalia, who own Modesto Cold Stone Creamery as well as Ceres Dry Cleaning, have launched the new business, described in a news release from the Ceres Chamber of Commerce as "an enclosed trailer featuring cold storage freezers, sink and snow cone equipment that will be used for catered events, parties and fundraisers."

The mobile venture makes its debut from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Monday at Project YES of the Ceres Unified School District, 2491 Lawrence St. Half of the proceeds will go to Project YES, which provides high school seniors and others up to age 21 with employment placement, interview clothing, job training and college assistance.
