Sokolove Law Recognizes National Asbestos Awareness Week by Creating Public Service Announcement Warning Public About the Dangers of Asbestos Exposure

Wellesley, MA (PRWEB) April 1, 2011

Sokolove Law, a leading provider of legal services and the nation’s most trusted mesothelioma law firm, is proud to announce its support of “National Asbestos Awareness Week” and plans to recognize the event by creating an ongoing series of public service announcements (PSA) warning the public about the dangers of asbestos exposure. The PSAs will be developed through the firm’s Ban Asbestos Now! (BAN!) advocacy program, and will feature personal videos, photos and stories submitted by BAN! supporters explaining how they have been affected by asbestos-related diseases such as mesothelioma and why the United States should ban asbestos.

National Asbestos Awareness Week will again become a reality thanks to the passage of a Congressional resolution introduced by Senator Max Baucus (D-MT). The resolution declares the first week of April as National Asbestos Awareness Week and seeks to “raise public awareness about the prevalence of asbestos-related diseases and the dangers of asbestos exposure.” Asbestos is a fibrous material once widely used in products for its resistance to heat and tensile strength. When disturbed, asbestos fibers can be inhaled and cause devastating diseases such as mesothelioma, malignant lung cancer and asbestosis.

“This is the seventh resolution establishing ‘National Asbestos Awareness Week’ and we’re encouraged to see momentum building annually,” explains Ricky LeBlanc, managing attorney at Sokolove Law. “Asbestos is potentially everywhere – in insulation, tiles, car parts and even in children’s toys – and this is a meaningful step towards educating the public and eliminating some of the preventable, asbestos-related diseases that affect thousands of Americans every year.”

In the spirit of National Asbestos Awareness Week, Sokolove Law is asking BAN! supporters to submit photos and videos of victims of asbestos-related diseases and their loved ones to be incorporated into PSAs that will “put a face to the BAN! cause” and raise awareness on a national level. Photos and videos can be submitted on the BAN! website under “share your story.”

“We founded the Ban Asbestos Now! advocacy program to give victims and their loved ones a voice in the fight against this toxic substance,” notes Jim Sokolove, chairman of Sokolove Law. “This fight is about more than just numbers and politics. These are real people with real stories about the devastating effects of asbestos exposure.”

“Contrary to popular belief, asbestos has not been banned in the United States,” added LeBlanc. “This is an issue we believe deserves more attention on Capitol Hill, and we hope that this PSA will give victims an opportunity to help educate others about the need to ban this deadly material once and for all.”

According to the International Ban Asbestos Secretariat, asbestos has been banned in 55 countries around the world. While asbestos is heavily regulated in the United States, it has not been banned and asbestos-containing products are manufactured and used every day. While some pro-asbestos lobbyist groups maintain that asbestos can poses no health risks when handled properly, the World Health Organization (WHO) has stated that there is no safe level of exposure to asbestos. The WHO also estimates that more than 107,000 people die from asbestos-related diseases annually.

About Ban Asbestos Now!
Ban Asbestos Now! (BAN!) is an advocacy program created on behalf of Sokolove Law to take a stand against the continued manufacturing and use of this cancer-causing material in the United States. BAN’s goal is simple: to share information about the dangers of asbestos exposure and urge Congress to ban the material to eliminate asbestos-related diseases like mesothelioma.
