SkiSafe Insurance Extends Hurricane Haul-Out Coverage And Offers Boat Protection Tips In Advance of Hurricane Irene

Lake Success, NY (PRWEB) August 26, 2011

As Hurricane Irene maintains its course towards the Atlantic coast, SkiSafe Insurance, a national leader in boat and personal watercraft insurance, has extended coverage under its Hurricane Haul-Out program for insured boaters seeking to protect themselves from hurricanes.

Introduced earlier this year in anticipation of a record-setting hurricane season, SkiSafe’s Hurricane Haul-Out plan coverage reimburses boat owners for taking precautionary measures to secure a vessel located where a Hurricane, Tropical Storm or Tropical Depression watch or warning has been issued by either the National Hurricane Center or the National Weather Service. SkiSafe will reimburse boaters for half of the expenses incurred hauling the vessel to safe harbor and re-launching it once the storm has passed, up to $2,500 per incident. This Hurricane Haul-Out reimbursement will also cover any storage or mooring fees owners incur protecting their boat.

Prudent boaters with questions regarding SkiSafe’s Hurricane Haul-Out coverage can contact the company to inquire about online boat insurance or call (800) 225-6560 for additional information. In addition, SkiSafe urges all boaters to consider the following additional measures to safely secure their vessel in advance of a Hurricane or similar storm:

   •      Trailer Boats – Transport the boat away from the path of the storm to a secure location.
   •     Marina Docked/Moored Boats – Either haul the boat to a secure location away from the storm’s path or reinforce all lines to secure pilings.
   •     Bilge Inspection – Confirm the boat’s bilge pump is fully functional and that its battery is charged to ensure sufficient power for the duration of the storm.
   •     Remove Equipment – Remove all portable boating equipment such as marine electronics, cushions, sails, life preservers and safety gear.

Although most boat insurance policies provide coverage for damage from a named Hurricane, Tropical Windstorm or Tropical Depression, Hurricane Haul-Out protection can help boaters avoid the stress associated with their vessel sustaining significant storm damage and ensure that they can take advantage of calm waters following the storm. Boaters are eligible for Hurricane Haul-Out reimbursement if they have insured against windstorms in their navigable area and an official watch or warning is declared for that area.

David Strauss, president of SkiSafe, noted that “many boaters are unprepared for a significant storm because the last few hurricane seasons have been relatively mild. We hope that sharing the burden of protecting the vessel encourages boaters to preemptively keep their boat out of harm’s way.”

SkiSafe’s boat insurance provides all-risk protection for boat owners against risks in addition to storms including fire, theft, vandalism and collision as well as for liability arising out of their ownership of operation of the insured vessel. SkiSafe has also made general boat maintenance tips available online.
