Several thefts reported Tuesday; 2 arrests made

The Moultrie Observer, Ga.
By The Moultrie Observer, Ga.
McClatchy-Tribune Information Services

June 11--MOULTRIE -- Multiple thefts were reported to local law enforcement Tuesday. Two of those cases led to arrests, including one in which a man is accused of stealing more than $1,000 from Wal-Mart over a three-week period.

Moultrie police charged Denwood Lawton Jr., 21, 710 Third Ave. S.E., Tuesday with eight counts of theft by taking. The police report listed a total of $1,020 in currency taken from Wal-Mart between May 21 and Tuesday, but it gave no other details of the crimes Lawton is accused of.

Other thefts

Moultrie Police

--Willie Anthony Hines, 36, of Moultrie, was charged with theft by taking Tuesday after an officer saw him with a leaf blower and a chain saw. Police determined the items were taken from a work truck belonging to Kirk Friedlander over the previous night.

--Katie Roberts, Ashton Crossing Apartments, reported Tuesday that she had put a $405 money order for her rent into the complex's drop box last Wednesday, but the manager contacted her and told her the payment never arrived.

--John Edwards, of Moultrie, reported a .38-caliber pistol was taken from his 2013 GMC Sierra about a week ago. It was valued at about $300.

--Marcus McBride, 1000 block First Ave. N.W., reported Tuesday that his wallet had been stolen. McBride gave police the name of a suspect who visited him Friday night, which is when he thinks the wallet was taken.

--Warren Lee West, 100 block Fourth St. S.W., told police Tuesday that two ladders had been taken from outside his residence; the last time he'd seen them was on Friday. Each ladder was valued at $70.

--James Donald Tillman, 1100 block Second St. S.E., reported Tuesday that a flashlight, two cables and $6 in change were taken from his 1999 Kia Sephia over the previous night. The total value of the stolen items was $34.

--Nora Ramirez, of Moultrie, reported Wednesday that she had purchased a phone card at Wal-Mart about 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, folded the card, put the money she received as change into it and put it into her pocket. Soon after, she found the card was missing, presumably fallen from her pocket while still in the store. She returned but couldn't find it.

A store employee told police that about the time Ramirez reported losing the card and money, a woman came to the customer service desk and tried to return a phone card. He said the woman was told she'd have to get her money back from the phone card company. The woman's card was folded as Ramirez described, he said.

The card was valued at $45, and it contained $19 in currency, police said.

Sheriff's Office

--John Burdon, 200 block 19th Street Northeast, reported Tuesday that a check was stolen from his wife's checkbook June 4 and had been cashed in Quitman for $225. Burdon said he'd given a ride to a man he knows that day, and that man had been in his vehicle alone for a few minutes while Burdon was in his business on Tallokas Street.
