Saturday’s high school roundup: Duvall paces Coronado to football victory

Sept. 28--Highlights from Saturday's high school sports scene around the Pikes Peak region.

FOOTBALL

Coronado 37, Mesa Ridge 14

At Garry Berry Stadium: Coronado coach Bobby Lizarraga said it was nice to see running back Isaah Duvall getting back to his old ways.

<p>Duvall ran for 178 yards on 16 attempts, including a 33-yard TD that more than sealed the game in the fourth quarter, and the Cougars (5-1) beat Mesa Ridge (1-4) for their fourth consecutive win.

"I think we came out a little slow. There were some factors for that. It was pretty hot and our kids were coming off homecoming week," Lizarraga said. "But I thought they got it together."

Especially Duvall. After he missed the first two games of the season (coach's discretion), Duvall looks to be running like he did in the Cougars' state title run last year.

On Saturday, his coach said he looked quick and powerful.

"It was fun to see," Lizarraga said. "He's putting together some nice games after missing those games. It's exciting."

The Grizzlies took a 14-10 lead in the second quarter with back-to-back rushing TDs, but Devon Baker ran for a 16-yard score to give the Cougars the 16-14 lead at half.

In the third quarter, Zeb Foster added two more touchdowns to help Coronado pull away.

Widefield 34, George Washington 29

At George Washington: Widefield (4-1) blew a 22-6 lead in the first half before regaining enough momentum to edge George Washington (2-3) in the second half.

Steven Starke ran for three scores and threw for another as the Gladiators overcame 22 consecutive points from the Patriots in the second quarter and rebounded after a 43-0 loss to Coronado last week.

Starke ran for two TDs in the first quarter and found Anthony Wentzel for a score en route to the 22-6 lead. But George Washington QB Nate Washington threw for scores of 66 and 20 yards and the Patriots tied the game 22-22 at half

Starke ran for his final score in the fourth quarter, which gave Widefield a commanding 34-22 lead.

Rye 32, Ellicott 20

At Ellicott: Ellicott (3-2 overall, 0-1 1A Tri-Peaks) lost its first league game of the season to Rye (4-1, 1-0).

When the Thunderhawks score more than 20 points this season, they are 3-0. Under 20 points, they are 0-2.

SOFTBALL

Discovery Canyon 8, Rock Canyon 7

At Discovery Canyon: The Thunder scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning and avoided their first two-game losing streak of the season.

Discovery Canyon (14-2), which lost to Vista Ridge on Wednesday, and in the process lost the lead in the 4A Pikes Peak Athletic Conference standings, took a 5-1 lead before the Jaguars scored four runs in the fourth and two in the fifth.

McKenzie Surface started the game and went four innings, allowing five runs (one earned) on nine hits. Corah Price took over for the final three innings, allowing two unearned runs on three hits.

Ki Givens and Emily Selby led the offensive charge, each driving in two runs in the win.

Rampart 16, Thornton 0, 4 innings

At Thornton: Nicole Widner drove in four runs and hit a home run, Alyssa McDowell went 3-for-3 batting with three RBIs and Rampart (13-4) doused Thornton.

McDowell scattered three hits in four innings and didn't allow a run. Rampart scored eight runs in the third inning and seven runs in the fourth to end the game after the bottom of the fourth inning.

BOYS' SOCCER

Thompson Valley 1, Palmer Ridge 0

At Don Breese Stadium: Palmer Ridge (4-5) had no answer for Thompson Valley keeper Jacob Sievers. The Bears threw 10 shots at the senior, but nothing went through in their third loss in four games.

Vlad Kazakov scored in the first half to give the Eagles their only needed insurance.

Doherty 2, Highlands Ranch 0

At Garry Berry: Anthony Acosta put the Spartans (8-2-1) up 1-0 in the 51st minute and Nico Cecenas added another score nine minutes later in their win over Highlands Ranch.

Doherty tied Chatfield 2-2 on Friday.

VOLLEYBALL

Air Academy def. Green Mountain 2-1

At Vista Ridge: At Vista Ridge's volleyball tournament, Ashley Pagan and Lauren Petty combined for 22 kills in the Kadets' 25-17, 17-25, 15-5 win over Green Mountain.

Pagan also had two aces and six digs, and Petty had 13 service returns and six digs.

Air Academy (8-7) has won two straight since a three-game losing streak that featured Rampart, Valor Christian and Pine Creek.

Vista Ridge def. Palmer Ridge 2-1

Green Mountain def. Vista Ridge 25-23, 25-21

At Vista Ridge: Earlier this season, Vista Ridge coach Greg Monck said the Wolves (6-11) were much improved from last season's team. A much, much better team that won three sets in all of league play last year in the Pikes Peak Athletic Conference.

And at their own tournament, the Wolves proved it. Freshman Lily Ainsworth had eight kills and three aces as the Wolves rallied to beat PPAC-foe Palmer Ridge (4-8) 19-25, 25-22, 15-13.

Vista Ridge stuck with Green Mountain, which had given Air Academy a close match earlier in the day, before losing 25-23, 25-21.

Bayli Monck, Greg's sophomore daughter, meanwhile, had 35 combined assists in the two games.

ECA def. Peyton 3-2

At Peyton: Evangelical Christian Academy'sKayla Sadorus had 10 kills and eight digs, fueling the Eagles (6-7 overall, 1-6 2A Black Forest) to a 14-25, 26-24, 25-20, 15-25, 15-5 win over Peyton (3-9, 1-6).

Karlin Rufenacht posted a season high 19 kills, and also had 11 digs and three blocks in the loss.

The Eagles and Panthers are currently at the bottom of their league standings.

CROSS COUNTRY

Castle View Sabercat Invitational

At Castle View: The Classical Academy finished well in the boys' and girls' races up north on Saturday.

Chaparral and the Titans' boys' team finished atop the team race standings with 78 points. Tanner Norman finished fourth with a time of 16 minutes, 40 seconds, followed by TCA teammate Everett Johnson in sixth (16:57). Dylan Day of Fountain-Fort Carson finished fifth (16:49) and Lewis-Palmer's Austin Bach finished eighth (17:10).

On the girls' side, the Titans finished third with 95 points behind winner Rock Canyon (57) and host Castle View (95). Megan Percy, the only area finisher in the top 10, finished third (20:12) and nearly a minute off the girls' race winner Dalton Savanna of Castle View (19:13).

BOYS' TENNIS

Lewis Palmer def. Doherty 7-0

At Lewis-Palmer: Nolan Rademacher beat Dan Slaugh 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 1 singles match, as Lewis-Palmer swept Doherty in preparation for the state's regional matches next week.

Meanwhile, Akmar Sultanbaev beat Tyler Bistline 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 2 singles match, and Breenan Stuart beat Chase Tirey 6-0, 6-1 in the No. 3 match. And the doubles matches weren't much closer.

The Spartans will be in Class 5A Region 3 while the Rangers are in 4A Region 3.
