Report: Pittsburgh drivers among country’s worst

Aug. 27--It's no secret that while Pittsburgh may be one of the country's most livable cities, it isn't necessarily the most drivable.

A report released this week by auto insurance giant Allstate reveals the Steel City may be populated by some of the worst drivers in the country.

"PA people still can't drive" is the headline of the news release issued by Allstate that shows that Pittsburgh and Philadelphia drivers were near the bottom of the 10th "Allstate America's Best Drivers Report."

Pittsburgh ranked last among cities with a population between 250,000 and 499,999 and 187 out of the 200 cities in the rankings.

Pittsburgh drivers get into a crash every 6.6 years -- a little more than 51 percent above the national average.

Allstate bases the rankings on its claims data and considers no other factors when compiling them, spokeswoman Julia Reusch said.

Allstate has about 20,000 policy-holders in Pittsburgh, Reusch said.

That means Allstate's rankings are based on 7.63 percent of the 261,992 in Pittsburgh who are over age 16 and eligible for a drivers license and doesn't factor in those who share insurance policies.

The rankings are intended to stir people up and make them consider safer driving practices, Reusch said.

"Our goal with this report is to make the cities that fall on the bottom of the list safer places to live and raise families," she said.

The top city on the list was Fort Collins, Colo., where the average Allstate-insured driver crashes every 14.2 years -- 29.6 percent lower than the national average of a crash per decade, according to Allstate.
