Plans for HVAC system at SHS discussed

June 26--Replacement of the heating and cooling system at Shelbyville High School could be completed next summer as plans were presented to the Shelbyville School Board by GRP representative Bob Fogerty at last week's board meeting.

The chosen system is a 2-pipe system that will allow expansion for a building addition in the future. But Fogerty pointed out concerns with the masonry and decorative glass blocks.

"We have to allow time to address these issues," Fogerty said. "The biggest problem with glass blocks is the maintenance issue."

Fogerty said that cost for asbestos abatement had to be stated as a range because of the unknown factor of how much asbestos there is.

"There are plaster ceilings. We don't know how much asbestos there may be behind the plaster until they are opened up," Fogerty said.

Fogerty said he expects prep work to be done in the spring 2015 with work finished in summer 2015.

In other business, the board:

-- Approved the amended 2014 budget. No questions or comments were presented regarding the amended budget.

-- Approved the prevailing wages as required by the State

-- Approved the recommendations by Bushue Human Resources Inc. regarding property, casualty, and liability insurance renewals.

-- Approved the bid by Howell Paving to resurface half the parking lot for $18,810.

-- Approved the purchase of a new 7 x 16 trailer to replace the one damaged by the wind storm in February.

No action was taken on the proposed purchase of a new driver's education vehicle. The vehicle was being considered for replacement before it was involved in a collision last week.

In administrative reports:

High School principal Richard Stuart presented the Samuel Linette Mize History award to Ben Houska. The award is presented each year to an outstanding junior.

Athletic Director Tony Pullen suggested adding 6th graders to the Jr. High girls softball program to bring the roster numbers up. He also presented a coaching evaluation form to be used for those in paid positions. Head coaches will be responsible for evaluation assistants.

Superintendent Denise Bence reported that the lone bidder for the meal program was Aramark with a 2 percent increase.

As a result of executive session, the board

-- Accepted the resignation of John Tynan as Scholastic Bowl coach

-- Accepted the resignation of Terry Walker

-- Approved the following coaching positions: Varsity baseball -- Sam Mehl; Bass Fishing volunteer head coach -- Greg Harkins; varsity softball coach -- Josh Maxwell; varsity boys tennis -- Ross Forlines; varsity boys track -- Kevin Kramer; and varsity girls track -- Jason Palmer.

-- Approved a salary increase for Superintendent Denise Bence.
