Penn Mutual Opens Center for Veterans Affairs at The American College

The Penn Mutual Life Insurance Company shared in the official opening of its Center for Veterans Affairs at The American College with a dedication ceremony on Tuesday, September 11. Since spring of this year, the Center has been culling through hundreds of scholarship applications for study of financial services credential or degree programs at the College, the nation’s leading educator of financial services professionals. So far, $125,000 in scholarships have been awarded with additional winners to be selected by year’s end.

“We honor the bravery and heroism of those who have served our country so nobly on the occasion of the official opening of The Penn Mutual Center for Veterans Affairs this September 11,” said Eileen C. McDonnell, President and CEO, The Penn Mutual Life Insurance Company. “We are delighted that the Center will help educate and enable a new generation of insurance and financial services professionals that will make our industry even stronger.”

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the unemployment rate among veterans now stands at the lowest rate in three years. Programs like the one offered by the Center may be having an impact but getting the opportunity is often a first step in assuring the success of our veterans. In many industries, especially in insurance and financial services, transitioning to civilian life and a new line of work can be aided through mentoring.

Because of this, McDonnell offered a call-to-action to those in attendance and the industry-at-large to mentor a veteran and actively support the Center for Veterans Affairs at the College. She pointed to the need for a support system for new industry recruits and offered that the company’s Paul Vignone, a longtime field leader from New York City, has stepped up to mentor the Center’s first scholarship winner, Marine Corporal Joseph Voellm.

In addition to McDonnell, the dedication ceremony included: Larry Barton, Ph.D., CAP®, President and CEO of The American College; Albert J. “Bud” Schiff, CLU®, CAP®, American College Trustee and Chairman of the Penn Mutual Center for Veterans Affairs Advisory Board; Rear Admiral Mark F. Heinrich, Commander, Naval Supply Systems Command and Chief of Supply Corps; Russell Figueira, Director of the Penn Mutual Center for Veterans Affairs; and Kuan-Yin Hamlet, scholarship recipient and U.S. Army veteran.
