Orlando Motorcycle Accident Attorney Urges Safety and Caution by Auto Drivers

Orlando, FL (PRWEB) May 24, 2011

Summer is here, and motorcyclists are hitting the roads around Orlando in record numbers. For car drivers, this requires an increased awareness of motorcycles on the road. Orlando motorcycle accident attorney, Lawrence Hornsby, of Horsnby Law Group reminds drivers of this as Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month draws to an end.

“All too often, we find that driver inattention on the part of car drivers is the cause for serious injury and even death involving motorcycles,” stated Mr. Horsnby. “I represent injured individuals and grieving family members regularly, and the reality is that a little awareness and attention could have prevented many accidents altogether.”

“Sadly,” continued Mr. Hornsby, “many drivers do not do their due diligence in being aware of motorcycles. When we get behind the wheel of a car, we have a legal and moral obligation to be aware of all others around us, including those on motorcycles.”

The good news for those on motorcycles is that it appears this increased push for awareness is working. Between 2008 and 2009, the last years that data was available, Florida’s Motorcycle Safety Coalition reported a 13.6 percent reduction in motorcycle crashes and a 12.7 percent reduction in injuries. This report came after a growth trend from 1997 to 2008. Fatalities are also decreasing, dropping from 502 in 2008 to 376 in 2009.

The Orlando motorcycle accident attorney says, “While these numbers are encouraging, the reality is that they should be even lower. My goal is to draw attention to motorcycle safety to see these numbers continuing to drop.”

Being more aware of motorcycles is not difficult. The Florida Department of Transportation recommends that drivers simply look for them. Instead of being surprised by motorcycles, they should search traffic around themselves expecting to see them. Double-checking intersections and blind spots before turning or passing is vital to keeping everyone on the road safe. Drivers should also keep at least four seconds of space between themselves and any motorcycles in front of them. They should never share lanes with a motorbike.

Yet, in spite of safety precautions taken, motorcyclists are still at higher risk for injury in crashes, simply because they are not inside a vehicle. When accidents do occur, many insurance companies try to place the blame on the motorcycle rider due to the fact that some do drive recklessly. That is why, according to Hornsby, motorcyclists who are injured in a crash need the help of a qualified law firm.

“We will thoroughly investigate all aspects of the crash to determine exactly who is at fault and help our clients receive fair compensation for their injuries,” he adds.

If you or someone you love has been injured in a motorcycle accident, Orlando attorney, Lawrence Hornsby, offers free consultation to discuss your case.
