Marty McIntyre was named Executive Director of the Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute (PCI) Foundation. In her new position, McIntyre will provide program management, marketing, and development for Foundation programs, such as the Precast Studios education program at six architecture and engineering schools in the United States. McIntyre previously held the position of Executive Director of the PCI Illinois and Wisconsin Chapter for 12 years.
Hanley Wood Exhibitions announced that Tom Cindric has been promoted to Vice President. Before his promotion, Cindric was the Group Director for the World of Concrete and CONSTRUCT trade shows. He joined Hanley Wood in 2001 and began working with World of Concrete immediately, where he was instrumental in improving the event and in developing international events, including World of Concrete India. While he will continue to have full profit and loss responsibility for the shows, he will also begin working on brand extension strategies. Cindric has more than 20 years of experience in the trade show and exhibition industry and received his Certified in Exhibition Management (CEM) designation in 1998.
Heather Smith has joined the Michigan Concrete Association (MCA) as Director of Engineering-Private Markets. Smith's primary function will be promoting the use of concrete in the commercial and industrial markets and working with MCA producer members and flatwork promotional teams. Smith previously held a position with the Barry County (MI) Road Commission for 10 years, managing various county road and bridge construction projects. She received her bachelor's degree in civil engineering from Michigan State University, East Lansing, MI, and is a licensed professional engineer in Michigan.
Gate Precast Company named Travis Fox as Vice President, Operations Manager, for its architectural and structural precast concrete manufacturing plant in Oxford, NC. Fox joined the company in 1997 as a Controller and became Vice President/Business Manager for Gate Construction Materials Group, based in Jacksonville, FL, in 2003. Fox is a member of PCI and serves as Co-Chair of the organization's Financial Performance/Risk Management committee. He received his bachelor's degree in accounting from North Carolina State University.
Honors and Awards
ACI member Isamar Rosa Plata is one of 40 young engineering students to receive a Tau Beta Pi graduate fellowship for the 2013-14 school year. Plata, who is studying civil engineering at the University of Puerto Rico, received the Nagel Fellowship, named in honor of a long-time Editor and Secretary-Treasurer of Tau Beta Pi. All Tau Beta Pi fellowships are awarded on competitive criteria, and recipients can perform their graduate studies at any institution they choose. Most recipients will receive a $10,000 stipend for their education. The program began in 1929 and has granted 1501 fellowships in that time, totalling over $5.7 million.
Martha VanGeem, FACI, was granted the 2013 Standards Achievement Award by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE). The ASHRAE Standards Achievement Award recognizes significant service in the area of standards leadership and technical contribution. VanGeem was given the award for her work on standard project committees and her advocacy work related to the adoption of ASHRAE standards in the United States and internationally. She has served on ASHRAE Standards Committees related to energy-efficient and green building design and was Chair of the Code Interaction Subcommittee of the ASHRAE Standards Committee. VanGeem is self-employed and serves as a project principal investigator and specialized consultant in the areas of green building, infrastructure, energy use, energy codes, thermal mass, and moisture mitigation.
Charles Dolan, FACI, received the 2013 John P. Ellbogen Lifetime Teaching Award, which annually recognizes the distinguished career of one senior faculty member who excelled at the University of Wyoming (UW), Laramie, WY. Dolan served as the UW H.T. Person Chair of Engineering and as a Professor in the Department of Civil and Architectural Engineering before retiring in December 2012. After a career in engineering, Dolan entered academia as a Lecturer at Cornell in 1986, then as an Associate Professor at the University of Delaware in 1989. He arrived at UW in 1991 as an Associate Professor of structural engineering. In his 22 years at the school, he generated more than $2.5 million in external funding, directed master's and doctoral students, mentored five Rhodes Scholar candidates, and was named a UW Top Professor three times.
