Christopher Keith Altizer

Christopher Keith Altizer, 32, of Cross Lanes, formerly of Switzer, departed this life on Friday, February 17, 2012, at Charleston Area Medical Center. Chris was born August 31, 1979, in Charleston, a son of Chuck and Pam Small.

He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Peggy Altizer; one sister, Jessica Small; and one uncle, Keith Altizer.

Mr. Altizer was a 1997 graduate of Logan High School and a member of the Central United Baptist Church.

Survivors left to cherish his memory include his parents, Chuck and Pam Small; one daughter, Marie Ward of Logan; two sisters, Kendra Small of Nitro and Charli Small of Cross Lanes; grandparents, Irene Frye of Switzer and Oscar Frye Jr. of Cross Lanes; and a host of additional family and friends.

Service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, February 21, 2012, at the Central United Baptist Church with Pastor Randy Skeens and Rick Adkins officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Pecks Mill. Visitation will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday at Collins Funeral Home Chapel in Switzer. Pallbearers will be Jason Jude, Bo Messer, Jason Hanks, John Marshall, Tommy Quick and Chris Fleming. Honorary pallbearer will be James Proctor.

Ralph H. Baughan

Ralph H. "Humpty" Baughan, 81, of Charleston, formerly of Chapmanville, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, February 17, 2012, at CAMC Memorial Hospital.

He was born September 13, 1930, in Pratt, a son of the late Ralph H. Baughan Sr. and Elizabeth Edwards Baughan.

Ralph was a 1948 graduate of East Bank High School and a graduate of Morris Harvey College. He was a U.S. Navy Korean Conflict veteran and a 42-year employee of Appalachian Power Company in the Charleston and Logan areas. He was a former member of Randolph St. Baptist Church of Charleston. Later, he was a member and deacon of the First Baptist Church of Chapmanville. He was a past Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 69 of Chapmanville and served on the Chief Cornstalk Council Eagle Scout committee.

Survivors include his loving wife of 54 years, Phyllis Weaver Baughan; two sons, Jeff and his wife, Ann, of Parkersburg, and David L. and his wife, Jamie, of Charleston; three granddaughters, Katherine and Rebecca Baughan of Parkersburg, and Taylor Baughan of Charleston.

Funeral service is 1 p.m. Tuesday, February 21, at Mount Calvary Baptist Church, 1509 Bigley Ave., Charleston, with Pastors David C. Baughan and James Bledsoe officiating. Burial follows at Kanawha Valley Memorial Gardens, Glasgow.

Visitation is from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Wilson Funeral Home, 420 Lee St. W. Charleston.

Jenny Faye Bostic

Jenny Faye Bostic, 56, of Dawes, formerly of Elkview, passed away Tuesday, February 14, 2012, at Hubbard Hospice House after a two- year battle with cancer.

She was a retired claims examiner with Wells Fargo. Jenny was a loving mother and grandmother who loved spending time with her family and friends, taking pictures, sports and flowers.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Clement and Marian Vickers Burdette; and brothers, Ovie Marshall Burdette, Jeffery Dale Burdette and Clement Burdette Jr.

Surviving are her husband, Billy Joe Bostic; sons, Bill Day and wife, Heather, of Statesville, N.C., and Allen Day and wife, Crystal, of Cross Lanes; stepson, Billy Joe Bostic Jr. of Dawes; brothers, Michael Burdette and wife, Alice, of Elkview, Roger Burdette and wife, Paulette, of Elkview, Jack Burdette and wife, Jackie, of Elkview, Johnny Burdette and wife, Jennifer, of Elkview, Frank Burdette and wife, Maureen, of South Charleston and Lew Burdette and wife, Joyce, of Elkview; sister, Bonnie Jean Jones and husband, Tim, of Pinch; and grandchildren, Sydney Day, Emily and Destiny. She was also loved so much by several nieces and nephews.

Service will be 2 p.m. Sunday, February 19, at Hafer Funeral Home, Elkview with the Rev. Roger Burdette officiating. Burial will be in Vickers Cemetery, Pinch Ridge.

Ira R. Carte

Mr. Ira R. Carte, 68, of Charleston passed away on February 16, 2012, at CAMC General Hospital after a short illness. He was retired with 45 years of service with the state of West Virginia, having last served with the Armory Board.

Ira was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Virginia Carte; and brothers, Ray and James Robert Carte.

Ira was a Christian and a member of Elmore Memorial Advent Christian Church.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Patsy Cross Carte; son, Greg Carte of Charleston; brothers, Harold (Daisy) Carte of Charleston, David M. Carte of Charleston, and <person>Randy (Linda) Carte of Elkview; sisters, Judith Carte of Clendenin, Gloria (Robert) Kessinger of Wakefield, Va., Sandra (Charles) Martin of Charleston, and Rosemary (Sam) Eltonhead of Palm Beach, Fla.; grandchildren, Cristopher A. Carte of Midlothian, Va., Kenneth B. Carte (Vanessa) of Charleston; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, February 20, at the funeral home, with visitation on Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. The Rev. Clarence Hutton and the Rev. Mike Todorovich will officiate. Burial will follow at Grandview Memorial Park, Dunbar.

Pearl Marie Davis

Pearl Marie Davis, 65, of Montgomery bid this world farewell on Wednesday, February 15, 2012, after a brief illness. Born March 3, 1946, she was the first of four children born to the late Thomas Kinney and Daisy Minor Kinney.

On November 3, 1963, she was united in marriage to James "Beverly" Davis. To this union five children were born. She accepted Christ as her savior at a young age and was baptized in Louisa County, Va. She was employed as a housekeeper for over 30 years.

Pearl was a dedicated wife, mother, and grandmother. She firmly believed God had put a calling on her life and was willing to tell everyone she encountered. She dedicated her life to God's work and was a member of the Senior Choir and the Mission at Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church of Carbondale.

Pearl was preceded in death by her father.

She leaves to cherish her memories her devoted husband of 48 years, James; three sons, Thomas (Kim) Davis, Keith Davis, and Christopher Davis; two daughters, Yavette Davis and Shelly Davis; her mother, Daisy Kinney; four brothers, the Rev. William (Gloria) Kinney, Jeremiah Kinney, Kelvin Kinney and Curtis Kinney; one sister, Irene Bradshaw; 21 grandchildren; seven great- grandchildren; a special sister, Freda Hickman; mother-in-law, Mildred Davis; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church of Carbondale. Burial will follow at Montgomery Memorial Cemetery, London. Friends may call one hour prior to the service at the church.

Dorothy Mae Dent

Dorothy Mae Dent, 82, loving mother, grandmother and great- grandmother, of Charleston was called to her heavenly home on Saturday, February 18, 2012, at Charleston Gardens.

She was a longtime faithful member of the Grace Church of the Nazarene, South Charleston, and was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Tiskelwah Chapter No. 45. Dorothy was retired from the Kroger Company and had previously worked for the Oakwood Pharmacy, Charleston.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Garland and Virginia Burgy; sister, Audra Haynes; and brother Delbert Burgy.

Surviving are daughters, Lee Ann Goff and her husband, Dale, of South Charleston, and Vicki Lambert of Lake Wales, Fla.; grandchildren, Brittany Goff of South Charleston, Christopher Pauley of Hilliard, Ohio, Chetney Lambert of Grafton, and Chelsea Hernandez of Orlando, Fla.; and great-granddaughter, Halie Lambert of Grafton.

Service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Grace Church of the Nazarene, South Charleston, with the Rev. Phil Lanz and the Rev. Sandy Burdette officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Memorial Park, South Charleston.

Frances Fitch Harper

Frances Fitch Harper, 94, died Wednesday, February 15, 2012, at Hospice of the Golden Isles, Brunswick, Ga.

She was born June 24, 1917, in Charleston, the daughter of John Augustus and Clara Mae Fitch. She was a graduate of Charleston High School, and attended Charleston Business College.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Waitman Grose Harper, whom she married in 1938; and by two sisters, Genevieve Fitch and Jeanne Fitch Shelton.

In Charleston, she was a member of Humphreys Memorial United Methodist Church (now Canaan United Methodist Church), where she served several times as local president of the United Methodist Women. She also held various leadership positions on the district and conference level, including the presidency of the district women's organization. She and her husband also served as youth counselors, and for several years worked at the district's summer camp for youth. She also worked as secretary to Senator Hornor Davis in the West Virginia State Legislature.

She moved to St. Simons Island, Ga., in 1992, and was active in St. Simons United Methodist Church in Sunday school and in the senior adult organization, serving as president and as a planner of excursions. She was also active in Newcomers and Pasttimers and was an avid bridge player. She was a member of the Friendship Force, and enjoyed much European travel and many cruises.

She is survived by two sons, John Fitch Harper (Jan) of St. Simons Island, Ga., and Dr. Timothy G. Harper (Vicki) of South Charleston; five grandchildren: Amy Barrett (Scott) of Norcross, Ga., Sarah Parker (Alan) of Murfreesboro, Tenn., Dr. Matthew Harper (Susan) of Danville, Pa., Megan Wilson (Trey) of Atlantic Beach, Fla., and Brett Harper of Glenwood Springs, Colo.; four step- grandchildren, David Lane (Shirley) of Snellville, Ga., Jennifer Lane of Ojo Sarco, N.M., Whitnie Kropp of Dayton, Ohio, and Dr. Bradley Kropp of Columbus, Ohio; eight great-grandchildren; twin great-great granddaughters; and nieces and nephews, including Beverly Tripplett of Charleston, Sally Ferrell of Arab, Ala., Sandra Swadley of Charleston, C. Sterling Johnson Jr. of Charleston, Pat Williams of Spencer and Mike Hicks of Morgantown.

A memorial service was held at 11 a.m. Saturday, February 18, at St. Simons United Methodist Church, followed by a reception in the Thorpe Building. The Reverends Marcia Cochran, Felix Haynes and Jim Jensen officiated. A private service of inurnment will be held at Cunningham Memorial Cemetery, St. Albans at a later date.

Charles E. Hash

Farewell my friends for I have completed my journey. I now seek my heavenly reward. I go to be with my wife, Lee; son, Bill; brother, Masten; sister, Mildred.

I leave behind my sons, John, J.R. and Dave to continue on.

I was blessed to be part of the Belle Nazarene Church for sixty years. I was also honored to serve the Town of Belle as an original member of the Belle Fire Department for over fifty years.

Crystal Martha Hinzman

Crystal Martha Ralston Hinzman, 90, a resident of Chesapeake Place Assisted Living in Chesapeake, Va., formerly of Glenville, W.Va., went to be with the Lord on February 14, 2012, following a brief illness.

She was born October 19, 1921, on the family farm on Laurel Creek near Tanner, daughter of the late William Rennick Ralston and Martha Bennett Wilt Ralston. She attended a one-room elementary school and graduated from Tanner High School. She married Leo Paige Hinzman on Sept 28, 1940. She worked in defense plants in Tennessee and Huntington, W.Va., during World War II; and for the Coca Cola Bottling Co, Wyoming County Insurance and WWYO radio station as office manager in Pineville, W.Va. She and Paige retired to Glenville in 1977 to their home in Camden Flats, where she resided till moving to Chesapeake, Va., in 2007. She was a member of Cook Memorial Baptist Church in Pineville and First Baptist Church in Glenville, where she served as circle president and financial secretary. She was also a member of the Bridge Club. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, where she served as Worthy Matron.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Paige; her parents; her brother, Virgil; her sister, Estella; and many half-brothers and sisters.

She is survived by cousin, Billy Bennett of Glenville; sisters- in-law, Esther Clevenger of Cox's Mills and Ruby Frymier of Tanner; nephew, Donald Plaster, and niece, Debra Plaster, of Virginia Beach, Va.; and many other cousins, nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, February 20, at Ellyson Mortuary Inc. in Glenville, W.Va.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, February 21, at Ellyson Mortuary with the Rev. Kenny Fisher officiating. Burial will follow in the Meadow Lane Cemetery on Kanawha Drive. Family and friends will gather afterwards at First Baptist Church in Glenville.

Edith Mae Jarrell, 80, of Cumming, Ga., died Feb. 16, 2012. Service will be 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 20, at Handley Funeral Home, Danville. Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Paul Calvin Jarrell

Mr. Paul Calvin Jarrell, 83, of Tupelo, Miss., died peacefully Thursday, February 16, 2012, at North Mississippi Medical Center after an extended illness. He was born December 23, 1928, in Chesapeake to Robert and Ina Rae Jordan Jarrell.

Paul worked in the aluminum industry, serving in various management positions. For nine years, he served as a United Methodist pastor to several rural churches in the coal mining areas of West Virginia. He considered his biggest achievement in life to be his marriage to his grade school sweetheart, Margaret Lavender. After eloping, they spent 64 years together. He will be best remembered for his unfailing love to his wife and family, always serving their needs.

A memorial service celebrating Paul's life will be held at the Tupelo Chapel of Holland Funeral Directors at 3 p.m. Monday, February 20.

Visitation will be from 1 to 2:45 p.m., prior to the service.

His survivors include his wife, Margaret Jarrell of Tupelo; one son, Greg Jarrell and wife, Donna, of Tupelo; one daughter, Deanna Ginther of Sikeston, Mo.; seven grandchildren, Clay Jarrell and his wife, Ashley, Mary Claire Jarrell, Lacey Carroll, Lindy Carroll, John Christopher Ginther and wife, Joanne, Matt Ginther and wife, Kristin, and Todd Ginther and wife, Deanna; great-grandchildren include Caitlin Ginther, Jacqueline Ginther, Jack Ginther, Jaydn Ginther and Jaren Calvin Ginther.

Lillian B. Jones

Lillian B. Jones of Charleston, W.Va., born August 19, 1930, to the late Harry Z. and Annie R. Epps, exchanged labor for rest and reward on Saturday, February 11, 2012.

She was a longtime educator and a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Lillian spent the last portion of her life at The Forum at Knightsbridge, a nursing facility in Columbus, Ohio, where she was surrounded with family and friends. She was preceded in death by her oldest son, Otis Z. Jones Sr.

She leaves to cherish her memories four children, Lewis S. Jones Jr. of Portage, Ind., Wilhemina A. (Freddie) Paulin of Philadelphia, Pa., Maritza Gist of Columbus, Ohio, and Royal Jones of Lynchburg, Va.; daughter-in-law, Ruby J. Coats Jones of Columbus, Ohio; five grandsons, Otis Z. II (Sharon L.), Colin A. (Imani), and Michael A. Jones, all of Columbus, Ohio, Lyron K. Paulin of Philadelphia, Pa., and Kidone Fish of Charleston, W.Va.; six great-grandchildren; one sister, Christine Merriweather of South Ozone Park, N.Y.; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Homegoing service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, February 21, 2012, in the chapel of Diehl Whittaker Funeral Service, 720 E. Rachel Michelle Justice

Rachel Michelle Justice, 38, of Danville died Feb. 17, 2012, at home. Handley Funeral Home, Danville, is in charge of arrangements.

Charles L. "Chuck" Mandt

Chuck Mandt, 69, of Atlanta, Ga., formerly of South Charleston, died at home surrounded by his family on Thursday, February 16, 2012, after a courageous battle with cancer and related illnesses.

The oldest son of now deceased parents, Charles Mandt and Virginia Nearman Mandt, Chuck grew up in the spiritual atmosphere of Rock Lake Presbyterian Church and the family oriented atmosphere of his parents' restaurant-Mandt's Drive Inn located in Spring Hill during the 1950s and '60s.

Upon graduating from West Virginia State College (University), Chuck was commissioned a 2nd Lt. in the United States Army and served his country with honor, including a tour in Vietnam. After completing his master's degree in mathematics from Stetson University in Deland, Fla., he relocated to Dover, Del., and taught math at Dover High School for several years. While in Dover, he continued his education working toward his doctorate in math, but was interrupted after being offered a job with IBM, where he worked for 17 years in computer sales and as a marketing manager.

Chuck was a very accomplished musician, a jazz pianist, playing at church and various social functions throughout the country wherever he lived. In 2008, Chuck was honored by Steinway & Sons by being inducted as a Steinway Artist.

While living in the Atlanta area, Chuck was an active volunteer of the "Friends of Sweetwater Creek State Park" and served as its president and later as the chairman of the board. He was also a member of the Battle Hill Masonic Lodge No. 523, Lithia Springs, Ga., Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion and a life member of the Disabled American Veterans.

Chuck is survived by Carol Ruth Branscome Mandt, his loving wife of 47 years; sons, Charlie, and Marc; and daughters, Julie and Lynn; six grandchildren; and his brother, Bob, of Cross Lanes.

There will be a memorial service and a celebration of his life at the First Baptist Church of Douglasville, Ga., on Sunday, February 26, 2012.

Albert "Al" Marino Sr.

Albert "Al" Antonio Marino Sr., 82, of Charleston passed away Thursday, February 16, 2012, at home.

He was born June 18, 1929, in Charleston to the late Cataldo Antonio "C.A." and Maria Pallone Marino. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Lucia Margaret; son, Paul Angelo; stepmother, Lovie Mae; brothers, Louie, John, Frank, Pat and Joe; and sisters, Elena, Margaret and Josephine.

He was a member of the Basilica of the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, Charleston.

Al was a 1947 graduate of South Charleston High School. Al and Lucia formed Elk Plumbing and Heating in 1952. In 1970, he named the company Al Marino, Inc.

Al was an innovator and icon in the plumbing, heating and cooling industry. He automated and elevated the trade to a new standard of professionalism. He had a tremendous work ethic and drive, and raised everyone around him to his level. He trained, motivated and inspired many others to enter the industry.

Al dearly loved his wife of 62 years, Lucia. He was blessed with a large extended family that he loved very much. He worked in his company until his final days. The pride he had for his employees, and the customer service he provided to the greater community, was legendary.

Al and five of his brothers were professional bowlers, and formed their first team, Marino Brothers, in 1954. He also sponsored and traveled with many local teams over the years. He was a dog breeder; an accomplished skeet shooter; an avid reader; and classic movie buff. He loved to ride motorcycles, and always looked forward to going on family vacations to Myrtle Beach, S.C. He will be missed dearly by his loving family and friends.

He is survived by his children, Toni (Tom) Orcutt of South Charleston, Albert Jr., "Jay" (Rhonda) Marino of Charleston and Lucy (John) Jividen of Charleston; brothers, Henry and Sam Marino, both of Charleston; sisters, Stella Valle of Phoenix, Ariz., Mafalda Wheeler of Charleston, Carla Saunders of Charleston and Elizabeth Davis of Charleston; grandchildren, Mary Lazo, Beth Davis, Tommy Orcutt, Nichole Sweeney and Charles "C.A." Patricia Kay Mitchell

Patricia Kay Mitchell, 71, of Sissonville passed away on February 16, 2012, in Sissonville.

She was born in Roane County and was a daughter of the late William Alton Simonds and Mildred Ellen Lee Simonds. Born handicapped with no legs, she attended the West Virginia Rehabilitation Center in Institute, where she got her first legs. Patsy and her sister opened the Simonds Sisters Sewing Shop in Dunbar, which they operated for a time.

Patsy won the Miss West Virginia Wheel Chair Contest, where she got to ride in several parades. On one occasion, she got to ride an elephant.

She was a former switchboard operator for the Holly Hotel in Charleston. When Patsy got married, she moved to Kentucky, where she adopted and cared for many children, some with AIDS. PK was a true angel on this earth. After retirement, they moved back to Campbells Creek near Charleston. Patsy loved to fish. She took care of her brother, Sam, until she got too sick to do so.

Patsy left behind a husband, David Null, whom she met in the nursing home.

Surviving, in addition to her husband, are a brother, Charles Alton Simonds, of Summersville; and several nieces and nephews. PK will always be missed and loved.

Funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Stump Funeral Home in Arnoldsburg. Interment will be in Clover Cemetery at Spencer.

Friends may call one hour prior to the service Tuesday at the funeral home.

James Lewis O'Roark

James Lewis "Jim" O'Roark, 71, of Peterstown died Feb. 15, 2012. It was Jim's wish to be cremated. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Broyles-Shrewsbury Funeral Home, Peterstown, is in charge of arrangements.

Dr. Robert Carl Ovington

Dr. Robert Carl Ovington, 86, passed away on February 14, 2012, in Overland Park, Kan., where he has lived for the last three years, since his retirement. Dr. Ovington lived in Charleston for fifty years, where he had a private medical practice in psychiatry, and raised three children.

Dr. Ovington was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas Carl Ovington and Naomi Robinson Ovington; his sisters, Alice Ovington and Gertrude "Babe" Ovington; his brothers-in-law, James Mason, Thomas Cline, and Raymond Bailey; his former wife of 26 years, Ann Cox Ovington; and her parents, Dr. and Mrs. Lloyd E. Cox.

He is survived by his three children and their spouses: son, Jeff (Vickie) Ovington of Austin, Texas, daughter, Lynne Ovington (Karl Freund) of Austin, Texas, and son, Mark (Laura) Ovington of Overland Park. Dr. Ovington is also survived by four grandchildren, Kristin Freund, Kira Ovington, Anna Ovington, and Natalie Ovington. He is survived by nieces and nephews, Walt Cline, Cindy Cline Lord, James Mason, Martha Mason, Dr. Carol Mason, Kathleen Ruth, Dr. Bruce Bailey, and Eve Bailey. Bob is also survived by his sisters-in-law, Barbara Mason of Charleston, and Phyllis Cline of Atlanta, Ga.

Dr. Ovington was born in Iowa, and graduated from North High School in Omaha, Neb. He is a graduate of Oberlin College, as well as of the University of Nebraska Medical School. Dr. Ovington did his medical internship at St. Luke's Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio, and his residency at the Menninger Clinic in Topeka, Kan. He also served four years as a doctor in the U.S. Navy, attaining the rank of Lieutenant Commander.

During his half-century in Charleston, Dr. Ovington had offices first on Quarrier Street, then on Bridge Road, and finally for many years at the Charleston Area Medical Center. The family lived in Kanawha City for over a decade, and later in South Hills.

During the 1960s and early '70s, "Doc" was a State champion skeet shooter at Coonskin Park. He was a talented clarinet player who played jazz by ear. He was a skilled and passionate amateur photographer who took a series of amazing photographs during a trip to Europe in the 1960s, which he displayed in his home and office. He loved to read non-fiction, and had an almost encyclopedic knowledge of history. He was a highly skilled marksman who could put five holes in a coin-size area at a hundred yards. He loved art, especially Impressionism. At various times he was a boxer, hunter, bowling enthusiast, played tennis at the Charleston Tennis Club, was a member of the Greenbrier Pool, shot archery, and pursued various other hobbies. He enjoyed spending family vacations at the Cox farm near Ravenswood.

In his earlier years, Bob overcame significant obstacles. He grew up poor during the Great Depression. His father died when Bob was 18, and Bob financed his education without the benefit of help from his parents. During college summers, Bob hitchhiked to Alaska to work on the well-paying but dangerous fishing boats. He sent money home to help support his mother. He was the first in his family history to attend college. Ultimately, he was able to send his three children through college and help his nephew with medical school. After Dr. Ovington's graduation from medical school, he worked professionally for over 57 years. He was a hard worker.

Dr. Ovington was assisted greatly for 27 years by his dedicated office manager and assistant, Jana Rowley Olah, formerly of Charleston, and now of Arizona. He also worked closely with his medical colleague, Nancy Canterbury. In his final years, he was cared for with great compassion by his son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Laura Ovington, and by the wonderful staff at The Heritage of Overland Park, particularly his aide and friend, John Chege.

Ethel Foster Pearson

Ethel Foster Pearson, 90, of Dawes passed away on Friday, February 17, 2012, at Specialty Select Hospital in Charleston after a short illness.

Ethel was a lifelong resident of the Cabin Creek area and was a former employee of New England Life Insurance Company, Coyle and Richardson, Berman's Jewelers, and the Boy Scouts of America. She was a gifted seamstress and owned her own sewing business. She was a member of the Chesapeake United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Mark and Katherine Montague Foster; and her loving husband, William D. Pearson.

Ethel is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth E. Rabon and husband, Donald, of North Carolina; son, John Pearson and wife, Susan, of North Carolina; sister, Eula Mae Lippett of North Carolina; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. The family would like to extend a thank you to Mom's special friend and caregiver Pam Kirk.

A service to celebrate Ethel's life will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, February 20, 2012, at Tyler Mountain Memory Garden Mausoleum Chapel with the Rev. David Biondi officiating. Burial will follow in Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens, Cross Lanes.

Agnes C. Peyatte

Agnes C. Peyatte, 86, of Charleston passed away peacefully at home Thursday, February 16, 2012, surrounded by her family.

With five children, eight grandchildren, seven great- grandchildren and many cousins, nieces and nephews, she led a life consumed by the love of a large family, and her many cherished friends.

Agnes was never one to sit idle. She retired from her position as a payroll supervisor for the West Virginia Health Department after many years of service. She also served as a deaconess and treasurer of the Partner's Sunday School Class at Calvary Baptist Church on Charleston'sWest Side.

Agnes loved to travel, particularly to beach destinations, where she enjoyed soaking up the sun, sipping a Coco-Cola and walking along the water. She was an avid reader, and especially enjoyed traveling to the settings of the many books she had read, including New Orleans, San Francisco, Las Vegas and Savannah. She was also a great supporter of the Charleston Regatta, and loved to spend time enjoying riverfront events in downtown Charleston. She also adored her friends, and looked forward to her monthly dinners with her retiree group.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Madison M. Peyatte; sister, Mildred Edens; brother, James White; and parents, Hugh and Grace White.

Surviving are her children, Madison M. Peyatte Jr., Penny Pulliam, Tonya Ferguson and her husband, Max, Randy Peyatte and his wife, Kari, and Kevin Peyatte; grandchildren, Ericka Brown, Brooke Peyatte, Nicholas Peyatte, Thaxton Peyatte, Grace Peyatte, Madeleine Peyatte, Kellie Woodrum and Courtney Leighton; great-grandchildren, Austin, Kadie, Ellis, Palmer, Braylee, Barrett and Uriah; sister-in- law, Betty White; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, February 20, at Bartlett-Burdette-Cox Funeral Home with the Rev. Mark Newland officiating. Burial will follow in Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens.

Ida Kathryn King Ross

Kathryn has left to join her son, Robert L. Sidebottom II; and her parents, Madeline and Dewey King.

She was born in St. Albans, W.Va., and lived there most of her life. Her home on Coal River was always welcoming and warm. Many memorable times were spent there with family and friends and will surely be recalled as the days pass.

In 1992, she decided it was time to move to Pensacola to be nearer to her family. She left her beloved West Virginia and became a fixture at the Park Place Apartments in Pensacola. She will be fondly remembered with the stylish single curler propped in her snow- white hair.

She was mother to Thomas K. and Michael B. Sidebottom, grandmother (nanny) to Ben, Meika and Matthew Sidebottom and Amy Hinson (Clint) and great-grandmother to Denver, Ella and Seth. She was Aunt Kathryn to Steve Sidebottom and Ada Carol McLane (Don).

She will always be in the hearts of lifelong friends Mary and Bill Rose and the Austin family of St. Albans. We will miss her.

A service for family and friends is being planned.

David Nelson Serls, 64, of Kenna went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, February 16, 2012, at home following a short illness.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Hedrick and Audrey Agnas (Fields) Serls; brothers, Ralph, Clarence and William Serls; and sisters, Gertrude Boggess and Adaline Bailey.

Survivors include his wife, Bonnie Lou Serls; son, David Nelson Serls II of Charleston; daughters, Audrey Faye Serls of Cleveland, Ohio, and Julia Anne Williams of Kenna; brothers, Dewey Serls of Bomont, Carl Serls of Charleston, Johnny Serls of Romney and Dayton Serls of Charleston; sisters, Betty Guthrie of Florida, Lorreen Teel of Ohio and Julie Miller of Bomont; grandchildren, Joseph, Loucreasey, April, Randy, Matthew, Emily, Lonnie, David, Joshua and Breauna; and great-grandchildren, Destiny, Dalton, Nickalous, Airauna, James and Andrew.

David's funeral will be , at Matics Funeral Home, Clendenin, with Pastor Billy Serls. Burial will be in Serls Family Cemetery, Glen.

Sylvia Stanley Stevens

Sylvia Stanley Stevens of Pompano Beach, Fla., was born to eternal life Thursday, February 16, 2012.

Sylvia was born September 27, 1924. She was the youngest child of Geneva May Langley Stanley and Judge Robert Edward Stanley. Sylvia graduated from Betsy Layne High School in Kentucky at the age of 16. She then attended Eastern Kentuckt State College, and graduated from Pikeville College in Kentucky with the highest honors. She taught in a one room school, and later taught high school.

Sylvia was born again March 24, 1943, and her life verse was John 3:30. On June 24, 1945, she married the love of her life, William Donald Stevens. She worked with her husband as an accomplished pianist, and they sang duets together. Sylvia did a lot of volunteer work at Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church Music Department in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Lastly, they retired in Fort Lauderdale, and spent their last 13 years in John Knox Village, where they were very happy.

The family will receive friends from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Monday, February 20, at The New Presbyterian Church - Covenant Campus, 512 NE 26th St., Wilton Manors, FL 33305, where a celebration of life service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Interment will be private in Forest Lawn North Cemetery, Pompano Beach. L. Neal Walters Jr.

L. Neal "Bud" Walters Jr., 79, of Eleanor passed away on Friday, February 17, 2012, at Hubbard Hospice House, Charleston.

Born June 9, 1932 in Mount Hope, Bud was a son of the late Lonnie Neal Sr. and Grace Miller Walters.

He was owner, operator and developer and CEO of Real Estate Equity Corporation, DBA, Camelot Village; a member of Minerva Masonic Lodge 13, Barboursville, A.F. & A.M. and a veteran of the United States Air Force. Neal was a pilot and loved flying his airplanes as well as restoring classic automobiles.

He is survived by his wife, Anita Walters; daughter, Michelle Walters Robinson (David) of Eleanor; son, L. Neal Walters III of Oak Hill; sisters, Janice Beaver (David) of Altamonte, Fla., and Patricia Brock of Mount Hope; three grandchildren, David Jr., Isaiah and Isabella Robinson; and his beloved dog and companion, Toby.

There will be no services at this time.

Mary Sue Wolfard

Mary Sue White Wolfard, 90, of Fort Worth, Texas, a much-loved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, received her "sweet release" from this life on Sunday, February 12, 2012.

Memorial service was held at 11 a.m. Friday at Gambrell Street Baptist Church, 1616 West Gambrell St., Fort Worth. Interment was private.

Born April 18, 1921, in Charleston to Leftridge J. and Clara P. White, she grew up in St. Albans, Kanawha County. After graduating from St. Albans High School, she seemed headed for riches and renown while attending West Virginia University in Morgantown, and beginning her lifelong affiliation with the Chi Omega sisterhood. While wrestling with God for a number of years, she changed the trajectory of her young life and married Rodney B. Wolfard on October 6, 1943. She later went to Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary to prepare for her impending calling as a foreign missionary, and set out for Brazil with her husband and three sons in 1953.

Teaming with her husband, she labored tirelessly during 37 years in the South Brazil Mission of the Southern Baptist Convention. During that period, they lived and served together in Campinas, Curitiba, Rio de Janeiro and Sao Jose dos Campos, where her ministry focus was centered on spiritual mentorship of indigenous women seeking Christ-centered personal development, family harmonies and church-anchored commitments. Her greatest gift was her warm, indefatigable hospitality. Out of her home emanated the lure of the Gospel through its most irresistible medium. She was a passionate giver of that for which every seeker longs. Her elegance was an element of character, not of style, radiating from her zest-filled service to others. Eternity alone will disclose how effectively God was enabled to transform the lives of so many through the loving, caring, generous and gracious touch of her presence.

She will be missed very much.

"Now to Him who by the power at work within us is able to accomplish abundantly far more than all we can ask or imagine, to Him be the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen."

She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Rodney; her parents; her only sister, Margaret W. and husband, William H. Keyser; and two infant daughters, Elizabeth and Sarah.

She is survived by her sons, Rodney and wife, Lorrie Wolfard, Stephen and wife, Cary Wolfard, and Dan Wolfard. She also leaves behind grandsons, Rodney and wife, Stevanna Wolfard, Nickolas and wife, Rachel Wolfard, William, Andrew and Scott; plus great- grandchildren, Faith, Jack and Luke Wolfard; many nieces and nephews; and a host of friends and colleagues.
